Of course they're allowed. In some systems they're the norm. Every one i've seen looked pretty much like a normal LRP spear...

| I played in a system where non-stabsafe spears where called "silly sticks" and disallowed on grounds of safety, as that much leaverage in a swing could do real damage and is hard to pull.

saxon violence - I'm not sure if they're currently making weapons, but their stabsafe spears are highly recommended, and I have a lovely sword and shield from them.
fishknives - as they used to do stab safe stuff as Kin Cheap, I imagine they could do one as a special.
The Dumnonii chronicles people mentioned they're putting a guide on "how to make a stab safe spear" - under the fantasy section of rule 7, there's a topic called "where can I get my spear & shield on" or something like that, which extols the virtues of stab safe spears in dark ages settings.
If all else fails, look up Dumnonii players and ask them where their mates got their spears from. In fact, Matt P has a decent sized stock in the Maelstrom monster kit - you could ask him if it was a special job lot or if he has a regular supplier.
No, you probably don't remember my character from the events I've been to.

Stab safe spears are one of those things I'd be happy having 9 people in 10 use against me, but am happy to ban because of the other guy.
Construction tends to be as follows:
Shaft as normal, with the stab end of the core tipped with THICK leather, then a wodge of dense foam. (Think of an oversized arrowhead). Then the rest of the head is light foam (open cell), with a thin layer (3mm) of closed cell top and bottom to give it some support - stopping maybe 4" before the point. (the core stopping maybe 18" before the tip). Latex as normal, but make holes in it to let the tip deflate if you stab someone.

You could make the same argument about most other LRP weapons.
Personally I've never been hit as hard with a stab-safe spear as I have been hit regularly with swings from most other polearms. I know there have been one or two serious incidents resulting from misuse of stab-safe spears, though, so I do think they need a little more training & awareness than most LRP weapons do. I think that any game big enough to have a Bow Competence Certificate should probably consider having a Stab-Safe Weapon Competence Certificate too... but then, I suspect they should also probably have a Two-Handed Weapon Competence Certificate in general, if they're (sometimes rightly) that distrustful of their players' general levels of safety.

The search function seems to have brought this thread up for me; I'm lookng for somewhere to buy a stab safe spear, but finding them seems not so much like finding hen's teeth as like finding hen's teeth which have been collected by leprechauns, loaded aboard Flight 19 and then flown into the Bermuda Triangle.
Does anyone in the UK market these?
EDIT: Never mind. It appears that Wandering Soldier may have wandered so far that they are actually able to make these.
