| Many moons ago, I took part in the roasting of a pig using two of those upright poles you get with temporary rope fencing, a scaffolding pole, a drill and lots of wire coat hangers. I suspect it wouldn't be good enough for an event, but nobody was even slighlty inconvenienced (with the noted exception of the pig and quite an amount of alcohol). Then again, I grew up in an era when health and safety meant looking both ways before launching yourself and your home made go-cart down a 1:7 hill and keeping your fingers crossed for the turn at the bottom. Geez you're a brave soul. I was hoping to be able to do chicken etc on it at later events so might have to invest in something a little more permanent. Then again a rope is cheap...

| While on manoeuvres in Germany, the officers decided we needed to have a nice BBQ to boost morale. Excellent idea, except, we didn`t have any barbecues. So we took the grates out of some sewer-holes and gave them a good scrubbing! Nobody complained. They just poked up the fire a little higher before putting their meat on.  And after we gave them another good scrubbing and then put them back.  But surely any smith can provide you with an authentic spit?
