So I was writing a futuristic larp, intending to use Airsoft, then the government came clumping along and thought, hmm, Airsoft will lead to world war 3, revolutions, and slaughter and pillage. . Lets make it somewhat hard to be able to run a club using airsoft.. as well as buying, carrying etc such guns... (I may have overly dramatised for effect)

anyhow, I have had a torrid time trying to tie the new law down and see how it would affect my larp, so I give up! instead, how viable do peole think Nerf guns would be. Now I know you are already laughing, or maybe just chuckling. But their are nerfguns with 35ft of reasonabley accurate fire. ok, it's going to be one bad sniping weapon, but it's already foamy goodness larpsafe too. Some of them look ok too, especially in a futuristic setting http://www.hasbro.com/nerf/default.cfm?page=nstrike_blasters

so can i have some honest thoughts and feedback folks, would it/could it work? after all, the guns are no more expensive than buying a  nice new Larpsafe gladius

Nerf weapons might be viable, but I'm not sure how good they will actually be.

For looks, some of the ones you linked to would probably work, and would certainly do if painted up a bit.

As to range, I've tended to find that the effective range of most of the guns tends towards something more like 10'-15' if you are outside, especially if there is any wind at all.

The darts may go up to the advertised range, but they will do so quite slowly, slower than LRP arrows in some cases. This would make them easy to dodge.

I'd advise getting one or two of the cheaper guns, and giving them a go yourself before making a decision.

Weirdly enough one of the first "home grown" LARPS I played down the local woods over 10 years ago now used nerf guns.  We had a trade off of accuracy and damage.  So an incredibly innaccurate weapon would be more powerful and vice versa.  It was a locational hit based system and worked quite well.

Biggest nightmare is losing ammo.  It happens alot, bring many spares.  The other problem is feeling that they've been hit by something.  Sometimes the impact was so light you didn't know you'd been shot.  People started spraying the nerf guns silver etc to make them look more high tech, worked quite well really.  You do need to suspend disbelief a bit with yellow ammo flying through the air though.  I'd definitely consider doing NERF LRP again.

well i want the game to involve hand to hand as well, so short range guns leaves people with the possible better option of charging with an axe ;-)

however the damage system basics are in place, Guns "can" be incredibly brutal...

I think I will pick up a couple and try it on a small scale.

as for ammo, in the US at least, you can buy new ammo. I suppose the club if it happens can do bulk imports and sell on ammo to those unlucky enough to loose it, or who just like lots of ammo.

Suspension of belief? we are larpers, it's what we do..

I reckon it sounds viable.

There`s at least one club I know who uses them in a cyber setting. Nice to see they`ve expanded the range, `cause I`m still thinking of joining. They`ve some fun people playing there.

For the ultimate LRP foam dart gun, which we`re considering using for a zombie game, check out BuzzBee`s Ruff Stuff. They`re more expensive, but get better reviews on accuracy, and are way more realistic in action. They also use 'shells' which get ejected after firing.

There`s a breach-loading double barreled shotgun ('breaking' the gun cocks the spring), a lever-action cartridge fed rifle, and a tommy-gun which jams very realistically

Outdoor Sportsman produce a more traditional pump-action gun, but in a more realistic look and colours than usual:

I know I'm going against my Lazer-Tag nature, but those buzzbee ruff stuff guns are pretty damn cool!

With the onset of the VCR act, everyone in Modern/SF LRP using a firearms system is going to have to undergo a bit of a transition, so if this works then groovy. The guns are nice and futuristic but with a clear 'real world' basis.

(And I know it's being uber pedantic but Thompson's only jammed using those darn clockwork drum mags - But then again, since that's what the nerf gun has, it's nice and accurate!). Sorry.

excelent stuff.

As to what specific guns people use, it's up to them I guess, so they can pay more for a  nicer gun, Glad to see there are more options, even if it means importing from the colonies

I think i'll give this a go, should be easy to modify the rules. Thanks guys.

Any more thoughts, keep em coming.

Unless that is how the guns work IC. . .

I've often thought nerf woul
