A long duelling sabre, with just a slight curve towards the end -- so that you can still fence with it almost as though it were straight, but you can throw in a few deceptions by twisting your wrist slightly & having the point end up somewhere your opponent wasn't expecting.

Lots of short cutlasses, buccaneer knives, hunting hangers, etc.

Falchions, of various sizes, including the real biggies like the Großes Messer and Kriegsmesser:

The Khopesh is, I believe, probably quite effective. Like most chopping (rather than slashing) weapons, you get a lot of the advantages of both a sword and an axe.

Ooh -- here's some nice pictures of various curved weapons:

A sappara (so that`s what they`re called? I usually refer to them as 'Egyptian sabres') would be most excellent. As a cutting weapon, it lends itself to nice circular movements, where you`re not slowed down by the fact that you`re hitting the target.

Some longer stuff would be interesting too, like naginata, or da dao.

Khopesh definitely a real used weapon, first used against the Egyptians who liked it so much they bought the company!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khopesh

Aye the Khopesh apart from being a damn fine and nasty looking weapon probably works very well. It’d be a very useful weapon in monster kit. Hoards of cultists wielding Khopesh would be just lovely.

Here’s a useful page on Sabres, with a few nice pics. I particularly like the Surik http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Sabres

This sabre then, got any pics of the kind of thing you were thinking of?

If you like the surik, how about the shasqa (most commonly spelled on the Net as shasqua)?

Something like the middle on on this pic:

http://www.kismeta.com/diGrasse/images/p_typeIII.jpg

Possibly with a slightly later style of hilt, that provides a little more protection -- or possibly not.

Basically it's a fairly light weapon adapted from a cavalry sabre, probably originally Hungarian, also popular in Italy, used for military duelling in the 18th-19th centuries. Maybe 38" to 42" overall length.
