As the disabled thread came up again it made me think. Last year we seriously considered becoming a charity, primarily because out of just under 20 regular players we had:-

1 Bipolar Disorder sufferer

2 with mild Aspergers

2 Transexuals, one with depression. (Assuming that gender issues are considered to be a psychological condition)

1 Claustrophobe

1 Clinical Depressive

Just seems like a really high proportion of people who can tick "Other" boxes on surveys.

Gender issues, including transvestitism, transexualism and homosexuality ceased to be considered as 'psychological disorders' in the 1970s after DSMIII. It was felt that considering them as such was discrimination and also that the sectioning laws were being abused in cases like these.

Its logical that an escapism based hobby would attract people suffering from such conditions, that can be quite dibilitating. What would the advantage of being a charity be though?

Well... lets see....

I work with schools. Given the ease of gaining a diagnosis... especially where they put 'mild' before Id say.

Bi-polar - thats abouot right stats wise according to some books ive read....

Your aspergers are irrelevant as this is infact quite normal. Ask them perhaps if they were diagnosed by an actual psychiatrist rather than a GP, SEN nurse or psychologist.

Suggesting Transexuality is a psychological condition can get you lynched these days. If it was psychological that would make giving out free sex changes a bit of a problem. Please note that persons who were not happy with sex changes or who have asked to be turned back are not evidence that the condition may in certain cases by psychological. Suggesting as such makes you more evil than Hitler.

Depression. Well hell given that every tom dick and harry has depression now...... hardly suprising. What they probably mean is.... my doctor said I might bne depressed and gave me some drugs. interestingly this does not equate at all with actual diagnosis from a qualified professional or need for the drugs.

Claustrophobia..... hmmm fear of confined spaces is quite common apparently.... and more likely to occur at LRP. Unless they are so bad that being in a room is awful should be ok....

In general people do like to have issues. Especially in this day and age.

Aspergers has become popular recently especially among bits of the population... its like the new 'dyslexia' as a result Im extremely doubtful of most people claiming this as some kind of problem I need to take into account.

Depressions quite common.

However I have met less transexuals roleplaying than in the theatre..... you may be transexual heavy with your club.

Last year we seriously considered becoming a charity,

I'm wondering how seriously you considered this.

I work as a volunteer for a non-profit, public-benefit organisation that has been trying to get charity status for over 2 years now - if the Charity Commission say No, then we'll be taking them to court; but until that happens, we're still twiddling our thumbs.

Getting registered as a charity is not an easy option.

Agree with Flannel on this one. Many of the conditions mentioned are specific problems which are based on a neurophysiological and behavioural profile. This usually requires a psychiatrist or neurologist or other specialist spending time with the patient. A GP cannot do it. Also, many claim mild depression when really they have severe stress disorders.

It's true that I have met a huge number of people with various psychological "disorders" (don't like the term, it implies a fixed state of "normal", but there you go) through LRP, but not disproportionate compared to other areas of my social life. Many of my friends from University were (whether by a psychiatrist, other medical profession or themselves) diagnosed with some kind of problem - and I really think that most people these days are.

Scratch that - I think that most people throughout history probably had some kind of mental thing that made them different. It's called being You.

And really, when I compare the people I know socially who claim mental problems with the number of people who have time off work for "stress" (I work in Local Government, it seems we have a stress pandemic), the balance seems to favour LRP...

are we on DSMV or DSMVI now? dont forget that being gay has been on and off its list a few times in the past.
