| Hi, I'm hoping to attend the next Maelstrom event as a Golem, and am starting to think of ways to statue myself up. I'm not the world's handiest person when it comes to the more arts-and-crafts end of roleplaying, though, so would appreciate some help. Basically my current idea is to gel my hair extremely solid, and use white hair-flair on all exposed locations (the statue was carved naked, so any clothes it's made to wear will be normal and not made of stone). The main problems with this are 1) I want to look like a statue and not just like an albino drow, and 2) if it rains I'm pretty much buggered. Does anyone know of any relatively easy and affordable ways to make more of a stone effect (I was thinking using black Snaz for shading or marbling effects), and how to ensure that at least the basics of my costume will stay on in the rain, and I won't be left just as a human with some sad white patches? Cheers, Richie

I'm no genius when it comes to make up, but layering black and white is always good, particularly if you shade the highs and lows in your features. Also texturing the make up with different sponge types to give it a flecked effect. Then to keep everything on, my group used to use hair spray. It does mean that it becomes a real effort taking all the make up off, but it's a sacrifice you have to make

Richie, I'm generally a bit rubbish at make-up, but for the hair I recommend you use a bag of Kaolin (order it from a chemist). It's a white, powdery clay, which when mixed with water forms a solid white substance that makes hair look distinctly weird and completely rigid. I used to use it at Dumnonni, for the spiked hair look that the Celts apparently used to achieve with lime. It's a lot more hair-friendly than lime (!), & a lot more solid & stone-like than gel, but washes out easily with water. Plus, I would think you could shade it with grey hairspray if you wanted it to be more stoney (it'd probably be all right as is, though; on your hair, it's unlikely to end up pure white, but more like very pale grey).

| That reminds me I used to use clay as a facial and hair covering as a druid. It looked pretty statue like I suppose. It can dry out and flake off but with a bit of water and you can rub it back in to cover again, either that or some watery clay in a small plastic bag in a pouch maybe? Just an idea.

Cheers, I'm going to have to spend the weekend experimenting with some of the ideas on this and the other thread (which is going to scare the crap out of my housemates). I'd also managed with my excellent skill for reading rules, to not notice that I have to be grey, so thanks to TheThomas (really? THE thomas?) for pointing out that before I paint myself white.
