| Well, where to begin, after being asked several times and hearing the recent developments of a D&D LARP group (3.5 addition) I was finally defeated by the curiosity to give it a try, the concept really didn't impress me at first and i thought the rules are so extensive in AD&D that it would just not work, however, i was pleasantly surprised and quite taken back! Right now the group is just running one day linears, and are looking towards the concept of doing weekenders, however, that said, considering the group has just started up I utterly enjoyed myself! As I know the refs quite well and the guy who mostly runs the whole show, I thought my opinion would be biassed to either looking at it negatively, or positively (it still probably is) However I did warn them that if i thought it was not up to stratch i wouldn't be returning again! (You can be quite blunt and honest with friends really) Well, the day started with some minor problems, serious traffic, and people backing out in the last minute and some people just not turning up without giving anybody any warning what so ever (But as we know thats LARP, it always happens). Once those got sorted out, the adventure started, the ref team / monster team seemed shakey at first, but really got stuck into it a few minutes in time in! Long story short you could describe the adventure as a dungeon crawl but through a forest, the NPC's were well role played, and i got to play my character perfectly. One of the greatest things i respect about this LARP already, is that i got the oppertunity to play a LE character (one i dont often get to do) and play him properly, anyone who broke the law (in my eyes of 'justice) was often sent to execution, me being a anti paladin, not often by my hand, i had befriended several other evil characters, and in a sort of manipulative darth vader / dark side sort of way, encouraged them to do my bidding and work with me, none the less many many 'innocents' were murdered in some obscure way of 'justice'. What i also like about the adventure concept, is you do get to rest so you can change your spells, generally have lunch half way through (so the typical AD&D make 'camp' situation) when we did this, we met NPC Halflings, who well, being halflings, tried to steal my helmit, well, Halflings being Halflings gave it back immediately, but it was too late, my plate helm was removed and the full scars and evil persona was shown (used liquid chollogen etc) they acted scared and didn't want to go anywhere near me! (Well role played) gradually they came back seeking profit while we were having lunch (there trade caravan had broken down) and were selling dodgey ' magical items' and some which were just not magical at all! Well, me being me, i decided to 'end them' using my manipulative LE skills and ways again, i got my 'friends' (bearing in mind there are LG people in the party who are the absolute opposite in deity and allignment as me) to kill the Halflings in the name of justice (for attempted theft). Gradually, one of the halflings was carried off, while I and another caught the attention of the whole party, and he was slain in the forest and his goods on his person taken. It gradually became more and more evil from there and more enjoyable! Suffice to say we completed the adventure and all survived (which was a shame, damn those clerics!) The rules are based upon the AD&D system but are simplified in many area's to make it more easier for LARP. I totally suggest anyone who is interested in playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons in a LARP setting, and trying something new give these events a try, they are often held on the third Saturday of every month, the first event to play or Monster is free, but then there is a charge of £5 an event / day linear. It is openly advertised and understood that it is a non profit LARP group, which puts all its money back into the kit and running of the system. The website is currently being worked on, and should be up and running as soon as the guy behind it all (Robin) gets enough time to finish it. http://www.dndlarp.co.uk/ Although I play in a lot of other LARP systems, and take part frequently in the International Viking age group of Jomsborg (Competitive Reenactment) I will be attempting to make a lot of time for D&D Larp. Indeed something to look out for in 2008! Give it a try guys, you'll be pleasantly surprised, I was.
