Not sure about the veracity of your claim for the root. As far as I'm aware there is still considerable contention as to the root. I'll post back when I have refreshed my memory.

| See, I still find myself getting quite upset when people use that word around me (particularly about me) although I'm not quite sure why. Rationally I know that it has no true offensive quality in the modern usage, and that there is little or no justification for any word to really have such an offensive tone, but it would seem that when people say it in my hearing, I lose my rationality. I have physically thrown people out of my house for saying it before now (although I was somewhat drunk...) and anyone who has ever called me it (to my knowledge) has either lost my friendship or made hearty apologies for it. I have no idea why I react like this - other than my conviction that I have been very successfully programmed by society and my upbringing, despite my best attempts to prevent it! However, I have been told that it was quite funny to see me twitching when I was in a performance of the Vagina Monologues and one of the girls was doing the "C*nt Rant" bit.

I find the word "cunt" about as offensive as the word "cock" and use the two interchangeably (except when speaking in specific anatomical terms, obviously). That being said, if people take offence at the language I choose to use and let me know, then quite often I will modify my language when in that person's presence. On the other hand, I might decide that I couldn't give a monkey's if they're offended or not. If people decide to make a huge fuss over my use of language, rather than just asking me politely to modify it, then they're much more likely to fall into the latter category.
