My friend wants me to make him some modern light full body armour to wear under a suit without it looking too obvious. Our initial ideas have culminated in a skin-tight top and some leggings  with pockets sewn on in the right places to insert pieces of foam (e.g. carry mat) or lino in them.

Does anyone have better suggestions?

Use something cheaper than foam, if you can, since it just has to be light & bulky, & won't be visible anyway. I used a 1cm thick padded, plasticised table protector that I picked up in Abakhan for about £1 a metre for my fake body armour.

If you want to save time, pick up a cheap & nasty "photographer's waistcoat" style gilet from a discount clothes shop -- I got a rubberised, fleece-lined one for about a tenner, cut holes in the lining, inserted cut-up table protector, and bingo, I had fake body armour. Can't really put anything much in the pockets or they fall to bits, but it looks the part...

if you want it to be hard pannels almost carpace but light and thin, get some adhesive floor tiles from B&Q easy to cut with good scissors or a knife will stick inside to add to stability (still sew around them so they in like a pocket) they are flexable (used them as a base for some greave and vanbraces) but if folded to tight to many times will crack. But in all if you cant see them they work greate as even if they crack they stick to the fabric and you cant see they are cracked.

Police issue anti-stab vests can be picked up quite cheaply.  Mine cost £7.50, but that was a while ago.

Be aware carry mat is a pretty good insulator, so while that can be good for outdoor games we did have one mate seriously overheat wearing a carry mat flak jacket indoors once.

Hey Sonza, if you know any folks from Nottingham (which you probably do) get them to pop down Anchor Surplus in Nottingham. Or give them a google and a ring. They sometimes have those bullet proof vests without inserts, well they did many moons ago before the Afgan/Iraq thing.

So what would be an airy non insulating option for inserts instead of carrymat? There must be something.

Camden market sell Cyber Armour for about £120 a top. Liek the ones that Blade wears, you know, in that film, Blade.

See if you can either:
- find a 2nd hand version
- Find a cheaper shop that sells them (i.e not london)
- Play the market stalls/ shops off each other, good for about £20-£35 if your good.

You could probably punch a bunch of airholes in the carrimat, since it doesn't have to function as actual armour. That ought to reduce its insulating capabilities, at least slightly, if the holes are big enough...
