| Given the current trend of discussing religion and faith, I'd like to bring up this topic. I've heard people say that because the current and previous Pope have spoken out against the use of condoms (calling it a sin against God), they have to be held responsible for the spread of AIDS in (the quite Christian) continent of Africa. What do our Rule 7ers think? Does ANYONE here agree with them that contraception is a sin against God? If there are any Catholics - why do they disagree with their Pope (if they're NOT anti-contraception) - is it just for convenience or do they have a doctrinal argument against his decision?

Just as another point against the Pope, recent research suggests that use of the Rhythm Method (Vatican-Approved) causes, on average, more dead embroyos than use a condom with occasional abortions when the condom fails. This is because sex outside a woman's fertile period doesn't prevent conception completely; it commonly causes non-viable eggs to be fertilized but then never carried to term.

| Directly? As in he caused it? um... i'd say no. Indirectly, as a factor, i'd say yes. It's all down to catholic dogma crap. To quote mark thomas: "Where does it say in the bible "loath the work of the Devil shall come in 3 flavours, just fucking show me!"

| Directly responsible ... No. Has the Pope and thus the Roman Catholic Church been responsible for the failure to control the spread. Well they shoulder a large part of the Blame for the situation and they have willfully and knowingly failed to intervene to prevent this.

| Prior to Pope JPII the vatican didn't have an official ruling on contraceptive medicine (as it was too new a development), and was considering allowing the use of condoms to prevent the spread of STI's. Good old JP changed all that. Not only did he discourage the use of condoms from a religious dogma perspective, he also commisioned a complete bollocks "scientific"study which claimed that Latex contains microscopic holes which allow Virus's through, and that therefore there was no point using a condom as you would be sinning to no good purpose. As if this wasn't enough he sent missionaries into Africa to spread this message, reinforce the sin message and even encourage superstitions like you can't catch HIV from a Virgin-resulting in a phenomenal rise in child rape. He personally ruled that an 11 year old rape victim should bear the resultant child to term, despite medical statements indicating that this could kill the victim, and then when her parents arranged an abortion for her he excommuicated them. He was a nasty old sod, whether you believe in God, Jesus, Satan or Bananas in Pyjamas and a great example of why belief or faith should never be mistaken for religion.

| *nods* and during that time I personally feel that everyone in the UK who claims to be a 'Roman Catholic' was also partially responsible Since they granted him the notional mandate to do this.

I once asked a friend of mine who was a Catholic why the Catholic church was against contraception. She told me it was because of a story in the Old Testament in which God commands a man to have a child by a particular woman. The man however, pulls out of the woman at the last moment, thus failing to concieve the child. Finally, God punishes the man.
Now to me, this implies that if God tells you to do something and you don't, then you're in trouble. To others, it seems to imply that if you use contraception, you're in trouble.
I sacrificed Philip Rogers to the Volcano God, and he blessed me with an alluring lammie printing machine and cursed me with a rough god queue pass. What will you sacrifice?

I agree entirly with the above. The interpretaion of that passage goes against any other precedent.
God got pissed cos the guy didnt do what he was told to do. End of. How can it be a damnation of contraception when no such thing is ever mentioned at all anywhere?
