| I'm going to be running a game based around the legends of Robin Hood next year and as a result I have been thinking about what elements to include within the stories. The legend of the man in the hood seems to hold quite a few facets, the fight for justice, the fight against unjust authority, the glamour of crime being justified, freedom from laws etc. So does anyone have an other angles on things to include in the stories?

As a linear it suggests itself quite nicely. Your Band of Merry Men (the party) fight their foes The Sheriff's Men (monster crew) in the name of the Good and Rightful King Richard (powerful npc?).

That's kind of the idea, but it's the reasons why the legend seems so important that it has lasted so long that I'm interested in and the elements that make it so appealing that it endures.

| I'm afraid the version of the story I'm most familiar with is the one where Robin is a fox and Prince John is a snake and Little John is a bear. Great movie. Children's classic. I'd suggest getting your hands on some of the older versions of the tales (pre-1900, if you can find them) and doing lots of reading on the time period (the crusades, the way the feudal system worked, the role of the royal family in leading the country, etc).

Personally, I'd use the elements of the story rather than the stories themselves. Partly because otherwise you run into the problem that only one person can be Robin Hood.
(And the Disney version sucked. I hate anthromorphic reworkings of folklore. Bad Littlebus. No biscuit).

I think that you would need to evoke the theme as best you can by clever adventure/plot/set setup. You need a large & atmospheric woodland to have the PCs camped IC inside (probably in small glades within the wood, rather than a big clearing). You need to have the PCs then set up IC scouts & sentries all round the forest, and IC means of communication, and then most of the adventures/plot will start out with them spotting a random bod wandering through the forest, and wondering whether to rob/kill/recruit/quiz him/her. That way you have the atmosphere of Robin Hood right from the start.
Also check out the ace 1970s Connery/Hepburn "Robin & Marian" movie.

For a slightly different take, there was a film a few years back called 'Robin Hood' with Patrick Bergman. It flopped as it was released at the same time as the much worse 'Prince of Bad Actors'.

| There have been loads of adaptations of the tale. The Sean Connery film was particularly good. The english robin hood film that Sarah mentions, part of it was filmed at Peckforton! What I was really after from you guys is which elements of the legend do you think are important to translate over to the game? Something about the legend of Robin Hood has captured the imagination/affection of people, it's that | | | |
