What with playing a religious fanatic and all, I've been giving some thought to religious trappings and so I immediately thought of the scratchy, flea-ridden joy that was the hair shirt. What I'm wondering is, what would be the best way to physrep it? I mean it's not as if you can buy one and I've no idea how to go about making one. Also, some way of making one that wasn't actually as uncomfortable as it looked would be nice too...

| I thought the tradition was to wear a hair shirt under your other clothes anyway, and even to keep it secret on that grounds that letting it be known would be tantamount to boasting about your piety.

Well, yes, but I was looking at it more as a punishment...

Use old army blankets?
Sew a t-shirt inside so that you can wear it though.

chalicier (8/13/2007) What with playing a religious fanatic and all, I've been giving some thought to religious trappings and so I immediately thought of the scratchy, flea-ridden joy that was the hair shirt. What I'm wondering is, what would be the best way to physrep it? I mean it's not as if you can buy one and I've no idea how to go about making one. Also, some way of making one that wasn't actually as uncomfortable as it looked would be nice too...What with quality hair costing $100 a kilo before it even gets to the wealthy countries? I wouldn`t be too sure you can`t buy one with enough money. Try wool in a natural colour. As animal-hair it comes pretty close, and it scratches too. Die it with a hair-toner. (No, I`ve never tried that one. Let me know how it works out. ) Oh, and don`t knit the bloody thing, try and find a weave that`s a little course and uncomfortable looking. Some wool-linnen blends look suitably coarse, but I`m not sure the dye will stick to plant fibres. Furthermore, try dying it in splots and splatches, so it will look like it`s made of unmatched hair colours. Surely being uncomfortable is the whole point? Of course, the easiest way to physrep wearing one - as opposed to physrepping one - is to keep scratching yourself. edit: What did they look like, anyway?

| It's probably not historically accurate, but the idea that comes to my mind is to weave some coarse cloth of wool or jute or something, and lay in bits of hair with the weft, with the ends poking out all on the side of the cloth which will end up against the skin.

I had a quick look at the Catholic Encyclopedia at http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07113b.htm and Wikipedia and apparently it was made out of cloth made from goats` hair. (Goats from Silica, hence the name silice (pron.SILis)) Hm, guess mongolian goats` hair is out of the question then. Alternatives are camelhair and certain cloths made out of plant-fibre, such as burlap (jute)! Now I bought a piece of black jute-cloth at a sale last winter! So it`s in the shops, and it looks great. Coarse, and a bit shiny, like you would expect from hair, although that last bit doesn`t really matter if it is jute anyway. It`s durable and it breathes very well, so it would be perfect for a summer event, and won`t trap sweat or warmth if you combine it with other pieces of costume. If you`re going to wear anything underneath, you might want to try one of those sexy gauze T-shrts, which might provide just enough of an extra layer to keep the fibres off your skin, without being clearly visible from the outside (the jute has a failry open weave, so I suppose it`s not really burlap, which is supposed to be densely woven?). The jute is strong enough, though, to protect you from a little roughing up with badly trimmed weapons or running through bushes. I was going to make it into a vest to protect my doublet from any armour I will me wearing over it, and probably will, once I find it again. (As apparently I didn`t put it in any of the likely places. )
