Leach (ex FBA) dislocated his thumb during unarmed combat. He was a nutter though.

Anyone themselves had bad experiences of unarmed fighting at LRP? (not just "I met this guy in the pub who told me...")
I've fallen into stinging nettles while grappling once or twice, but that was mostly my own fault for initiating unarmed combat right next to stinging nettles.

| A broken collar bone when someone jumped on someone by suprise from behind and got rolled over their targets shoulder to the floor. Im not sure its a good idea to allow grappling unless both participants are ready for it. suprise attacks are OK but going the whole grapple by suprise when someones unprepared can lead to injuries... common sense really.

| I think alot of this comes down to what you're happy with OOC when leaving an event. I assume I'll be bruised and aching, with a few minor scratches or cuts from any event - if I'm not, that's a bonus. I've done alot of grappling events (been actually hit with wooden chairs etc) - and never been hurt more than the above, so I'm happy. I've been surprised to hear from others over the years that their 'acceptable damage threshold' is considerably lower than mine. All I want is knowledge ahead of time of what is/isn't allowed and for everyone to stick to that. I hasten to add that I'm not (and don't think of myself as) in great shape, a ninja or someone regularly engaging in other contact sports or martial arts - yet I've mysteriously survived... ...I've hurt and been hurt by people being more physical, but no more than by an accidental unsafe blow.

| My issue with unarmed combat at games is more that in my experience the inclusion of unarmed combat created a sort of 'arms race' where suddenly the fist beats everything. Ok, this was in one main game (since most other games I have played seem to avoid hand to hand combat out of safety worries) but it got really silly when you'd pull out your flintlock rifle and shoot, only for it to miss. Then you'd pull out your pistol and shoot at the now fairly close target. With gritted teeth you'd realise that you'd missed again (regardless of any sort of sharpshooter skill) so out would come the sword. Couple of swings at which point the not-right you where fighting would ignore all hits becaus they wanted to have a fist fight.... As for injuries sustained in hand to hand fights I have personally seen a few incidents that while not directly hand to hand are certainly linked to grappling. One was when two guys came together for a sword fight. One of them dropped his sword and landed a wonderful knee straight into the groin. No accidents, no nothing just 'Wham!!' Second was when a group of new guys turned up at a modern day/sci fi game playing squaddies. We where due to meet up with the main player group and so where running around the woods for a while avoiding the crew. When we did meet the players they where understandably edgy about a group of new people who they did not know, while we new people where edgy due to running around the woods avoiding fights and generally not really knowing what was happening. At this point the usual 'gung ho' attitude appeared when you put guys with guns and one bloke decided to legsweep another to take him to ground and pull a gun on him. End result? A broken knee and an ambulance ride to hospital!! OK - these examples don't follow the criteria laid down by Alistair but they SORT OF do (IE in that they involve grappling...) Equally both these situations could have been avoided if the people involved had just chilled out before deciding to be butt monkeys. In short H2H is OK if both parties are cool with it and keep their heads. Anyone who 'Looses it/sees red or whatever has no place on an LRP battlefield in my opinion. My 2ps worth!! - 13~7

Missed this the first time.
Worst one I've personally had was bruised ribs after a 6ft+ guy in heavy armour bodyslammed me to the floor in what was otherwise a really spectacular set-piece fight. I was a bit annoyed, though, as I was (and am) pretty sure I'd have won had he not left me in OOC agony.
Bearing in mind that my worst ever LRP injury was a knee wallop which left me walking with a limp for 2 months (caused by trying to use a tree to slow my descent down a steep incline and failing), it's a tossup whether unarmed combat or "the surroundings" have done me more damage. But then I suspect I'm unusually careful.

Actually I've had far worse injuries from weapons than unarmed combat - in 6 Pillars I was happy to take part in grappling (only two guys took me up on it, much to my disappointment), and never suffered an injury. I've taken part in hand-to-hand combat in the Aberddu system too, although I tended to get ref-slapped for picking up speed through the fight... it's a habit I find hard to break.
My worst non-accidental injury was from a bloody idiot slamming a seven-foot mace into me at full strength - the "knockback" call wasn't needed, he actually DID throw me back six feet, into a tree, leaving me dizzy , winded and horribly bruised. He was an ex-ref, and later had the gall to tell ME off for an unpulled blow... (forgive the bile, it still ranks as the single worst LRP experience of my life).
