Give me a call at Skian Mhor www.skianmhor.co.uk 01555 894787

I stock all materials for LRP weapons (and quite a few that most people haven't heard of!)

Plastazote LD45 is the most common available from many suppliers including Trylon, Zotefoams, Kay Mettzler and myself I also stock glues, fibreglass cores, carbon cores, latex etc. I also offer help and advice on weapons building, (I've been building LRP weapons for 14 years and working with the same materials industrially for over 20 years)

I will attest to Skian Mohr being able to provide foam (and everything) in an extremly easy to order to manner.

One thing I've always wondered though - why do you only stock black foam?

I don't believe I just spent ages writing this reply and then the site came up with an error and it lost my message, I now have to type it all over again!

We stock black foam as it's much easier on the eye, we used white for a while fourteen years ago but when you use as much foam as we do all day, everyday then you'll appreciate how easy black is on the eyes, white foam makes you snowblind, seriously you just can't see what your doing after a few days of nothing but white. Secondly, Black is cheaper, (black and white are the cheapest, other colours are about 10% more expensive) and thirdly we basecoat all of our weapons in black latex and it covers better over black foam. The black latex is for a few reasons, it makes a great indicator, it goes on grey and dries black so you can clearly see when it's completely dry also you can achieve mush better shades of colours wheh you apply reduced layers over a black base, (common knowledge for miniature painters I suppose!).

I know a lot of people like white foam because they can draw on it but it really is very easy to draw on black foam with either a soft pencil or an empty ball point, you then don't have the worry of inks bleeding through the glue and latex, which it eventually will every time!

We can supply any colour within the vast Zotefoams range if you don't mind waiting for a few more days and paying a little more.

Next question.....

Out of curiosity, how does LD30 compare to LD45 in terms of useability for LARP weaponry?
For instance, I know that in France, they prefer LD30 for blades, but 45 for hilts and the like, but I believe the general standards of construction differ quite a bit...

LD33 is fine as well, it all depends on what you're making and where you're intending to use it. You mention using LD33 in France, generally I would use higher densities in hot climates and lower densities in cold climates. For Scandinavia we use Evazote for many blades as it doesn't harden as much as Plastazote in the cold. I've found LD45 to be very soft in the South of France where we've sold many weapons, in fact Boars FL in Italy used LD70 for their blades! Way to hard for UK use but soft enough in the Italian sun.

The other rule we use is to use a softer foam as the striking surface area increases. LD45 is soft for a sword blade where the edge is only two or three millimeteres but it would be way too hard for a hammer head, we would use LD18 or LD15 for small hammer heads and clubs and then switch to PU foam for large hammer heads.
