I think its a pretty cool idea - especially as theres many varied ways to portray the journey and create memory guides. People could also try and create a map within the ritual circle using props or drawing in the earth with a stick or whatever to try and aid their memories. If the map was quite big and complex you could divide it into different sections (based on elements or gods or starsigns or whatever) so a simple spell would be in one small section and a complex spell would have to go though several different sections. That way someone whos not as good at memorising can stick with a single section and the really powerful mages have to learn massive amounts of info

Also it might be cool if rather than simply "getting a ref" the player has to attract the attention of the spirits/gods/etc, So they set up their ritual circle and start doing random ritually stuff until either they give up or a ref turns up in a big black hooded robe and tells them where to go.....so to speak ;o) Gives magic a slightly unreliable edge as well - just because your talking doesn't mean the powers are listening

That's a marvellous concept - has that whole "gatekeeper on the edge of reality" feel to it. Also some Campbell influences too.

Ooh, a Joseph Campbell influenced mythic LARP is an idea, now I think of it. No, no, must avoid thread rot...

I quite like the idea Smitt. The only draw back is that players with a good memory would be at an advantage, but I suppose that’s the same with combat (players who are fitter/faster etc). You’ll have to also put in some kind of flange that stopped players just having a scribble crib sheet magic map, something like that it is a blasphemy to write down a magic map.

All in all it's a great idea fro a 'hard skill' magic system, but it's the kind of thing that could put people off playing magic users, it would certainly deter me. I seldom if never play a magic type and adding this extra barrier would certainly make me think no thanks.

Why?
Isn't a classic stereotype the wizard incanting and making passes with one hand while consulting a book held in the other?

Well having it all written down kind of gets rid of the point of the whole thing being a memory game to simulate a hard skill of magic knowledge.

But what if that book gets lost or stolen? What if deliberate misinformation is added?
If the characters have to piece the map together themselves, there's plenty of opportunity for sabotage.
What if the map is structured so that you can make intelligent guesses about what the next stations will be?

There's much more to this than just a memory test.

Spellcasting must be done blindfolded, 'cos... uhm... whilst in the 'spellcasting trance' if your eyes are open then evil spirits can get inside you and eat your soul? Early magi just closed their eyes but were tricked into opening them and their souls were eaten.

Nothing wrong with a spellbook then as an "aide to memory" but you wouldn't be able to rely on it during casting.

I quite like it as a ritual magic system. It would also be fun if starting players had a few 'routes' (The Sacred Art of the Northern Line) and have to work out in-game the intersections with other paths / disciplines.

Possible......but could be a bit messy trying to do a ritual whilst blindfolded? Hey but could all add to the fun.
