Ocelot (6/22/2006)
I remember seeing on a documentary that some very low frequencies can even cause the eyeballs to vibrate and (temporarily) distort slightly, causing the subject to actually see shapes (often roughly humanoid) in their peripheral vision.

In many churches, the largest organ pipes are capable of producing infrasound...

A prof at Warwick uni found out about this and it was something to do with dead sound waves or something... In a particular lab, the sound from a fan, basically reflected and cancelled itself out in the middle of the room where a desk was. This caused an odd deadspot in sound and certain frequencies of sound that caused people to experience things when sat in this area:

Like they were being watched
Could see shapes out of the corner of their eye
Hair on neck standing up on end, skin crawling etc.

He could apparently reproduce this in various subjects and when the fan was turned off the effect vanished instantly and the place felt less "oppressive".

Interesting stuff.

Just been reading about that as it happens... apparently the ideal wavelength is between 18-19Hz, it would be so cool to use intermittent infrasound to mess up the players.

The major downside is that infrasound can cause seizures and inner ear problems.

I don't think you'll have a large problem if you stick to 18-19Hz

Apparently its used in some films and music to create 'feelings'.. so if you were to stick to that kind of output level I imagine you'd be fine..

Just out of interest...  How would one go about creating an infrasound wave...?  Just out of interest, you understand.

subsonics comes to live role play. excellent. I'm a big fan of both sounds an scent in lrp games, they go a ong way to creating a subconscious atmosphere and can really enhance a game, especially if it's just under the level of hearing.

You know you can achieve that kind of effect without the high tech fiddly stuff. If you're using background music in a game you simply mix two tracks together, for example a bit of classical music and a bit of evil sound effects like mutterings, chantings and moans. You set it up so the 'evil' track is quiet and then over the course of an hour or so you gradually bring the volume up, eventually people notice but there's always a bit where they get unerved by the sounds but don't conciously hear them . Works even better if theres a lot of stuff happening and they don't have time to think about why they're being freaked out .

A voice was heard to say, “Who dares disturb the crypt of the Immortal Space Bitches?”
“I am Grimm Shado,” said Grimm Shado, triple wand claws extending. “And I am here to take it to the limit.”

I don't know all the details (not my department) but I'm told DB is using infrasound to create atmosphere in certain parts of the temple complex.

I found this.. which is a 19Hz wav file (at least it says it is!)

http://mystudy.ath.cx/study/19hz_standing.wav

all you need is to loop it (or maybe string it together in a larger file) and play it from a sound system with a good bass response!
