2-weapon users are definitely at a slight but significant disadvantage in the system, I think. But then, at a game in which combat is relatively rare, 2-weapon users have the massive advantage that they don't have to lug around a shield or pole-arm -- just a couple of swords or axes on their belts.

As was mentioned in reality two weapon wielders usually end up parrying with one, in a real situation. With LRP weapons and their lack of weight its easy to swing both in ways that may not be possible with the real deal.

It does though lead you towards shield and sword or polearms, and you know the field is somewhat more even. Shields Ive always found a real advantage and in this system thats increased over 2 weapons.

In other systems a two hander will usually be a disadvantage, because its real life equivilent weight advantage is lost, people arent afraid to block it with a tiny dagger and nip inside. Perhaps it evens the field?

In terms of play balance in the PD system, it's worth noting that Maelstrom is one of the only systems I'm aware of where there is no cost to your character to wield two weapons at once, nor any restriction on the size, shape, etc. So that's a clear advantage for people who like to fight ambidex.

It's also worth noting that while the physical system doesn't obviously encourage the use of large two-handed weapons, the added reach and cheaper skills cost of larger weapons does. Again, it's something I think is relatively unusual in other systems. In most games, the larger a weapon is, the more "points" it costs you to do damage with it, in PD the opposite is true more or less.

Not directly relevent to the one second rule, I'll grant you, but it is relevent to it's usage within Maelstrom and it's usage more generally were it to be adopted elsewhere.

As was mentioned in reality two weapon wielders usually end up parrying with one, in a real situation.

That depends massivly on the style in which your fighting, ive done some bits of 2 stick/ machete kali, whete parrying is considered a waste of opertunity to cut somones arm off, as they would tend to parry against the limb from inside ranges.

and just to join in they would then start cutting at rates a lot faster than 1/ sec.

Personly i dont like the 1 sec rule, but hey its not real life so i dont worry about it. as long as people dont try and convimnce me its more realistic

I've never had much time for realism, in my games or in real life...

Yeah, I agree with Matt. Realism is for simulationists, not gamers....

I don't think the 1-second rule is realistic (anyone who doesn't believe you can knife someone effectively more than once a second should checkout http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqdC-OJTm9M&search=pekiti -- the guy at, is it 32 seconds? 4 knife stabs in less than a second, with no apparent difficulty), but it makes for more enjoyable games, and that's way more important than realism.

Basically, yeah. Realism schmealism. What's important is that you can't knit someone to death with your lighter-than-air Tallows rapier, and you can't gently stroke my various limbs and claim it's killing me. It's not because they're not realistic, it's because that's Just Plain Shit. As long as Just Plain Shit things are against the rules, I'm happy.

Huzzar! Well said sir!

I myself prefer fighting with a staff. and as such am neither hampered by, nor do i gain any advantage from, a 1 second rule. So im fairly indifferent to be honest.

Shame theres no skill for it at M'strom
