We've had a couple of topics on Riftworld music and I thought movies would be good. Recommendations for things for people to see and such like.

Anyway, I was re-watching some of the special features on Appleseed and thought that people might like to give it a try. Its a CGI anime by the great Masamune Shirow. He's a guy who likes cybernetics and very hard science fiction. Good effects and a solid story. I want a landmate or failing that a Mobile Fortress!

Also in the middle of reading China Mieville's Perdido Street Station. Which has a bizarre mix/clash of cultures. People might enjoy giving it a try.

After racking my brain, I can't think of much that in of its self evokes RW. Some aspects can be found in stuff like:

"Screamers" - I'm thinking Xadacians from this. Peter Weller, from Robocop stars. A bit of scifi gunfun with bunkers and nasty chainsaw robots. (Not a cheap porn film like it sounds...)

"Space Hunter, Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" - a classic slice of madmax rip-off, mixed with spaceships. Has a wicked cybervillain on a derrick, a really nifty ship on rails and a host of bizarre vehicles. Quite enjoyable (inspite of Molly Ringwald being in it, in fact the amount of jeapody she is put in throughout, is rewarding in itself ).
Particularly good 'Twisted' in it.

"Tetsuo" and "Tetsuo2" are worth a look for the demented end of cyberpunk.

Nanolords should read stuff by Ian Mcdonald. I really liked "Necroville"

Also a book called "Sky Lords" - John Brosnan (not the Steve Jackson thing) of which I have found there are now three.

Anything by Gene Wolfe, esp. The Books of The New Sun (far far far future) or the Long Sun (a decayed culture stuck on a giant spaceship) series.

- Come to Riftworld:the sun never shines, tomorrow is not a better day, but you can drink and swear all you like. That's when we attack.-

"And not to pull your halo down around your neck and tug you off your cloud....but I'm more than just a little curious..."

"This wicked tongue says, go on - taste everything...and the noise is as much as I can bear..."
