I want to make (eventually...) some LARP safe throwing chakram (see http://l2.shaft-e.com/data/equipment/image/knuckle/chakram.jpg for a rough idea) but I don't want floppy foam discs that fly a grand total of 2m - 1.5m being off target...

Would it be possible/safe to use a throwing disc/frisbee (http://www.kiteshop.co.uk/xcart/outdoor-fun/aerobies-and-frisbees/aerobie-pro-ring_p335.html) as a 'core'? Seeing as it's designed to be safe to hit people with from a distance - as not everyone catches them! And there's no sharp bits, and they're not actually solid? But they would be better than, say, using coins like I know people have used for shuriken...

If people core throwing weapons with glue sticks, would the flying discs be suitable?

Try foam rubber discuses, with a thin coat of latex, then paint & isoflex. IMO they're perfectly safe. They don't have a hole in the middle, though, so you wouldn't be able to carry them in your hat or on a hook so easily as the real ones.

I got these ones and regard them as eminently safe, though I forgot to use them at Hyborian Tales last weekend -- d'oh!

You can get heavier ones here that I've not tried yet -- I suspect that you could remove the middle from these ones & use them as more of a chakram that way:

Otherwise usually crew ("Quite spry & fit, & willing to wear a big costume & run around a lot" -- various event organisers)

You can actually buy purpose designed foam frisbees for afew pounds apiece. I think I posted a link somewhere in the method awhile back. These might work as a base
