Pretty much what is says on the tin...

I'm constructing some LARP sfe fighting claws from foam builders knee pads, which seem to provide a well padded and reasonaby sturdy base and standard LD45 plastazote.

The current plan was to use a sandwich of 6mm - 12mm -6mm LD45 foam, coreless so to meet most of the main systems safety guidelines. Unfortunately on test runs I've found the "claws" are just a bit too flexible and tend to twist or bend on impact (or at least more so than I'd like).

Any advice from the sage's on here would be much appreciated - in particular with the aim to strengthening the foam sandwich claws (or an alternative method if I'm missing a trick).

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Well alot of throwing weapons use glue sticks, you can get smaller glue sticks for like mini glue guns so they may be effective?

this is just an idea ive never used glue sticks myself but im sure someone on here would have

p.s just a nother quick thought is to used the samwiched cloth method thats used to make sheilds strong yet still flexable, just leave a few mm around the edge

I have a very stiff shield made from (I think) five layers:

cloth
10mm foam
cloth
10mm foam
cloth.

For your claws I'd suggest cloth between the thick and thin layers of foam. It might be that putting it in just one of those joins might add enough stiffness for claws: you don't want them too stiff, after all.

I thought the glue sticks in thrown weapons were to add mass so the weapons fly better and further.

Thanks for that, should have thought of a fabric support, will help spread any torsion at the join with the pad aswell...

Off to try a second test run - any other suggestions gratefully accepted

Huh! How best to describe this without pictures? If you laminate sheets together they will gain some strength. However it might be better to build the claws in box section (sheets glued to form a triangular curved tube), albeit a triangular box section. Imagine a fizzy pop can. The sheet aluminium will be floppy as a sheet, but form it into a tube with ends and it becomes rigid. Either way I’d check with the game organisers (whichever game it is) about what they would consider safe, some may just say ‘no’ no matter how padded they are.

Hey Chris, Baz here (yeh preston baz!)

Bret is currently making some fighting claws and there looking very nice and very sturdy i believe he used the glue stick approach to make his claws a bit better! Definatly worth having a chat with him as he seems to have the idea down pretty well

See ya soon buddy!

From using glue sticks in throwing weapons, I'm not sure they really add anything in terms of rigidity. Fabric between the layers of foam sounds best to me.

Hi Baz,

Thanks for that I'll have a chat next time I'm about, no particular rush. I'm tempted to agree though that I don't entirely see how the glue stick idea will add much in terms of ridgidity.

However the toblerone box construction method (foam triangle), seems like a cracking idea - should have thought of that one (though I'm not sure how I'll get the look I was going for) looks like I'll be doing several test runs.

Cheers

Can I echo the cloth between layers of foam plan? Works wonder on axe blades etc...

A good cloth to use is stuff you get for putting on flowerbeds to stop the weeds coming up. It's rip-proof, and tough, and doesn't just absorb all the glue into a sticky mess.

PS when on earth did people start putting glue sticks in throwing weapons? I thought most systems only allow coreless stuff...
