Here's a question:  I'm going along to that Eos thing that that nice Mr Stroud is proposing.  I'm feeling that I'd like a bit of a change from my PD character but that would leave me with:

1) No armour

2) No shield

Now.  I'm not the world's smartest person but it does seem likely that I'll be horribly spacked if I do this, therefore, since I'm quite tall (6'2") and fairly fit that some sort of pole arm or two handed sword would be good, I've been fortunate enough to be shown some basic blocking and attacking with a two hander but, my character concept is relatively fluid about which at the moment, so I was wondering if there were good arguments for or against either.

well im doing eos and i have decided that im not going to go for the 2 swords i was planning on in favour of a quater staff as im going for a scout character. i prefer the whole both ends are equally as dangerous and defensive thing they have. plus its easier to hide when im running away

IMO a simple spear is easiest to get the hang of, in 6' long weapons -- in less than 30 seconds I can show you a couple of attacks with a spear that will deal with 90% of opponents, and in another 30 seconds you'll be proficient with them. In Mr Stroud's game I'm fairly sure you'll not be permitted to stab with them, as he's made his feelings on stab-safe weapons very clear, but they're still dashed effective.

A 6' long sword is a bit harder to grasp -- I would think you'd need at least 10 or 15 minutes of practice and sparring to be reasonably proficient with the basics. Once understood though, you'd probably find it more versatile & effective than the spear. Mostly this is due to the guard -- the big weakness of a spear in a fight (assuming that the spear-wielder is capable of running backwards and so avoids the REALLY big weakness, i.e. an oppponent closing fast) is the lack of hand/arm protection.

Just to be helpful, I think the most important sentence relating to polearm or great weapon use in Eos is the following from page 48 of the rules guide.

"Small weapons only ever do one point of damage."

Sorry, not trying to turn this into a thread just about my game...

As you know from Shadovald experience, I rather love two-handed swords, so you're probably going to find my personal opinion somewhat biased.

In my experience, staves are categorically universally *better* than swords or polearms from a pure 'larp fighting' combat effectiveness standpoint - so much so, in fact, that I will generally assume a stave user to be more-or-less unbeatable, and choose another target if I have the option. It's a bit of a shame, really, that the swords especially just aren't so good - because from an aesthetic standpoint they're far more desirable (c'mon...a beautiful two-handed sword, or a stick?). A battlefield unit all carrying sticks doesn't really have the same effect as a unit carrying zweihanders, after all.

So you're faced with a choice. If you want to kick arse, go with a staff of some kind. If you want to *look* kick-ass, go with a big sword, or a poleaxe/mace if you really want to make an impression. I'd go for style over substance any day, even if it means compromising your combat effectiveness.

True, but it depends on what your staff looks like.  There are some very ornate ones out there. I played a priest at CP with the two-handed weapon skill, and bought myself a six foot staff.  It was actually one of Eldritch's spiky ball maces, but blown up in size, so the 'head' of the staff was about the size and shape of a basketball.

Very impressive, and pretty effective.  Especially good for intimidation purposes; in and out of combat.

I would be inclined to go for a poleaxe or halberd over a spear, greatsword or staff, particularly if you can't stab with the spear.

I think this is more down to people not really knowing how to use other weapons properly, than the staff being inherently superior!

Cheers for the thoughts.

Theresa, were I to wish to go all Mordechai on someone's arse than I would have no hesitation in going for a two handed sword.  Because they LOOK so kewl.  But, I said I wouldn't be wearing any armour (because that makes casting more expensive), therefore thematically I think I will enjoy some form of staff as being more appropriate to the character and more appropriate to a non-line fighting role.

I may well take you up on that offer of tuition Mr Sturrock (and not just because I wish to avoid assault by certain two handed sword wielding nutters ).

As far as I can make out pole arms and great weapons are functionally identical in Eos, so whilst everyone needs a porta-club for will reductive goodness, it doesn't seem to matter which one I choose.
