| Tut! How remiss of me! I've been playing Battlelore for quite a while and forgot to mention it on here! It's a very accessible two player board game set in a "uchronia" where the battles in Medieaval France for Agincourt and so forth are replayed but with wizards, warriors, clerics, rogues, dwarves and giant spiders and other giant creatures. The main strengths are: It's rather a lot of fun, you get a lot of little plastic miniatures (which are already desprued!) and there's a very simple, very easy to use battle system which is quicker and considerably more fun than Warhammer Fantasy. I'm saying you could play both sides of a scenario in about an hour. I'd say the main weaknesses are that you can't really make up your own armies, however, you can download scenarios from online. Also, archers seem a little underpowered (although the calvary are suitably 'ard.)

| It's a good game, and part of an ongoing line of hexgrid board battle games (historical ones previously) that are also quite respected. We have an open copy in the local shop and I've played through most of the scenarios in the book (from each side). It should be noted it is best thought of as an abstract board game rather than an actual wargame. I believe the expansion pack adds a system for army building (but not points based), through I haven't seen it first-hand.

We've got Commands and Colours Ancients which is basically the same system (written by the same bloke) but with battles between Rome and Carthage. It's pretty fecking good. The basic game has 13 historical battles with more online. We'll be doing Cannae tomorrow. I'm playing the Romans There's a 'Greeks and Eastern Kingdoms' expansion already and more on the way. Coffmeister, do archers in Battlelore get the same two shooting dice they do in C&C? I think the key might be to mass your archers together. Throw enough shit etc. That said, the other day I took down a unit of Carthaginian elephants with a squad of light javelin chuckers. It was a shame I didn't roll flags instead - elephants on the retreat are very entertaining. Stamp, stamp!

Hmm... Basically the English lose Agincourt, although in retrospect I think this is because the French do get cavalry. Also archers don't count "bonus strikes" with a long bow and can't shoot at point blank. Can't remember how the crossbows work. :-/ Oooh... does anyone have "Ancients" and "Battlelore"? Crossover?

| Weird. Does the scenario take into account the shitey terrain the French had to cover? Do the archers get any bonuses from their prepared position? Is the battlefield narrow causing the French to bunch together? Of course the French should have won at Agincourt - if they weren't up to their arses in mud (I'm oversimplifying, I know). The scenarios in C&C are definitely weighted in favour of the historical victor, none of your Warhammer style 'even' battles here. Unfortunately it does mean that the Romans have been getting a pasting lately
