Shelford (5/10/2007) That's strange. When I started out almost everyone was from a tabletop background originally. Have the times changed? Maybe someone should do a poll 'How did you get into LRP?'.I think times have changed, partly due to GWs insistance of distancing itself from similar things (i.e. referring to "the Games Workshop hobby" rather than wargaming as a whole, denying that there's any connection between wargaming and RPGs, etc.). LRPing as a whole seems to be looked down upon by GW, this stretches from head office (bloke I LRP with is mates with Dave Andrews who won't give it a try because he thinks it's a bit weird) to the customer (many of the people I've suggested it to have been put off by those stupid videos on YouTube).

Personally I'm quite glad that my hobby occupies the same intellectual space as beautiful Brazillians wrestling in baby oil. ;-) Does GW actually own any of it's shops now? It seemed to make a conscious decision not to buy the sites a while back which is a shame because I'm sure the property would be worth something now.
There is only overconfidence and terror.

| Most ofthe closures and the downsizing is actually happenign on teh continent where the hobby hast been so strong or growing very well. GW dosnt own most of its shops like most retailers in towns they rent but i belive the own ther flagship ones like head office. Also i would guess that the development, dropping, revelopment and continual development of wahmmer online (MMORPG) has been a huge financial cost as normal computer games have a 1-3 year turnover and then wham you get money MMO take alot more expencive and longer development.(i know GW is redevloping it but im not sure if they are doing it themselves or with another company)

| My 15 year old son lost interest in January, hence the massive fall in profits, but he's going back to the local store on Saturday so everything will be fine!!

The original Warhammer online was a joint venture between Climax and GW, which GW pulled the plug on because of the cost. As far as I know the new one is fully funded by EA Mythic.

| Oh how I wish GW had the money for the Climax MMORPG. It looked beautiful, it seemed like it had captured the feel and system nature of the RPG perfectly, it was the only game that would have come close to tempting me to play a MMORG. While the EA game appears to be much more of a fantasy battles thing. Sorry to derail but the climax game had my hopes up for sooooo long.

| You never know, perhaps it will be a good thing? Perhaps they will re-brand themselves back to being shops full of old bikers smoking roll ups and listening to insanely bad metal instead of being riddled with a pox of small children. Those were the days.

Hmm, this might go some way to explaining why my local gaming store owner was approached by GW about stocking their products when we have a GW store and have had for years.
I never really got the hate that a lot of gamers have for GW, (I'm too young to remember GW selling anything other than their own products,) until they printed an absolutely ridiculous editorial in White Dwarf a couple of years ago. It was some anniversary of the magazine and they were talking about its history, which you can't really do without mentioning roleplaying. Instead of ignoring the rest of the hobby, they decided to spout some absolute rubbish about no-one playing RPGs any more because they were too expensive and time consuming. Quite how a £20 rulebook, some dice, pencils and paper costs more than a few hundred quids worth of miniatures, plus dice, rulebooks, scenery, paints, brushes and glue I don't know. Or how an evening of adventure planning is more time consuming than the hours it takes to paint aforementioned figurines.
They also claimed that the total number of roleplayers in the UK was, if I remember correctly, around 5000. How many people were LARPing over August bank holiday weekend last year?
It's one thing to cast off your roots, it's quite another to hack them off, bury them and then piss on the grave.
