I know what science is, and you probably think that you do as well.

In the interests of starting a bun fight, write down what you think Science is.

No notes, no cribbing, no copying from the boy next to you. We'll know if you cheat...

I think of it primarily as a method.

Science is as Science does?

Science is the study and theorism of the physical (and in some, lesser cases, mental) happenings in our universe.

In the broad/archaic sense, a (redundant) synonym for 'study'.

In the narrow/contemporay sense, the product and practice of the 'scientific method' (which isn't liable to a distinct expression within the bounds of one sentence - the wikipedia page isn't bad, but the reference to the requirement of methodological naturalism has been yanked since last I looked).

Science is hypothesising about the physical and metaphysical, while proving neither and arguing about the validity of both.

Science is an rigourously organised method for learning about the universe in such a way that my findings are repeatable, reliable and can be assesed readily by others.

It is a method, not a philosphy.

I have this vague fuzzy notion of what Science is, based around 'I know it when I see it', which I think is about the same as everyone else.

Roughly, science is the study of things by the method of making falsifiable statements about them and showing that all of the obvious ways of falsifying them don't work.

Oh yeh, Science never proved anything, it's completely useless.
