Eudorus (5/12/2007) The western Knight had it's technological and social/military peak two centuries earlier so if you wanna compare the effectiveness of the Samurai to it's western equivalent you'd need to put him up against either a pikeman or a musketeer. But that again isn't a fair comparison. Pikemen and musketeers are cheaper to produce than samurai. Therefore you should have more of them. And what if you buy your samurai a bow and a horse as well?

I had considered this but thought that it would be labouring the point.

Eudorus (5/14/2007) I had considered this but thought that it would be labouring the point.Hi! Welcome to Rule7! Also, the further thought occurs that pikemen and musketeers are meant to be used en masse rather than on their own. With the rise of futuristic battle armour and the change from WW1 of the company to the squad sized battle, will things change over to 1:1 duelling again?

I believe that recently British troops have done at least one bayonet charge (Iraq) and probably had several other HTH encounters (there was a report of at least one conflict involving bowie knives, bayonets, and kukris in a cave in Afghanistan).

Hyborian Tales: Crew, cook, dogsbody, general labourer, toilet cleaner ("Dangerously overoptimistic ref" -- Tom Nowell)
Otherwise usually crew ("Quite spry & fit, & willing to wear a big costume & run around a lot" -- various event organisers)

Bayonet charge in Iraq:

Hand-to-hand fighting at Tora Bora:
http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article1777867.ece
(I've seen other news stories that mention both the above two, including more detail about the Tora Bora battle, but those were the first two that came to Google.)
