I'm not going to stray into the grey areas of animals with near-human intelligence like Apes, Dolphins or benefit cheats, but as far as dumb animals like chickens go: I just don't see them mattering on a cosmic scale.
Its a sheep, not a person... why should it matter?

*grins*

I dunno, im pretty sure that most humans dont matter at all on a cosmic scale.

Its a person, but I dont really know/like them. Most people are little better than sheep anyhow...

why do they matter?

I am of course being slightly pedantic for the sake of discussion, I do not neccessarily disagree with you im just probing for reasoning....

Though to be honest I might eat somene in the right circumstances....

Well, I could try to draw a line between 'people' and humans... given that those who one has met or interacted with will always be more real to one than the sprawling mass of humanity that spills rampant across the earth.
Humans have the capacity for rational thought, animals do not. Any choice on the human's part not to use that capacity is both tragic and shockingly common, but they have it nonetheless. I could even draw a comedy hierarchy of the animal kingdom in an attempt to lighten the mood of the thread if you wanted...

In descending order of importance in the world.

I figure that since you meat eaters are getting your angry on, I should be able to respond in ridiculous kind! Here goes.... Rant Ahoy!

You know what I'm fucking sick of?

LARPers somehow feeling they need to get on my case because I'm a vegetarian.

I cannot even count the amount of times I've asked for the veggie option at a LARP event, only to have a bunch of cunts turn on me and grill me about it.

WHY THE FUCK DO YOU CARE?

You have no idea why I became vegetarian, you have no idea what my reasons might be. And to be honest I have zero fucking interest in telling you. I don't want to have a discussion about why I shouldn't be veggie, about how its not actually more healthy, about how its hypocritical. Its irrelevant to me whether you think my reasons are good or bad, (and I'm not convinced either way myself) I really couldn't give a fuck what your opinion is on this matter.

And yet they continue. Like everyone of them thinks that they are the first hilariously self-righteous wag to take me to task on this subject. As if all it will take is the application of their insightfully cutting critique of my life, and I'll change my stupid ways.

What is it that makes LARPers especially need to vigorously assert their carnivorousity all the time? Just because I don't eat meat, doesn't mean I'm tacitly questioning your right to do so, or threatening your world view. Are LARPers so insecure in their own beliefs that someone who doesn't fit into the same dietary slot as them must be brow-beaten into submission by the borish meat fanatics?

Fuck man. It makes me sick.

And yes, I don't experience the same phenomenon in "normal life"... it's particular to LARP events. I think a lot of LARPers think that because they've held a rubber sword and run around a scout camp a few times, that somehow they're Conan the fucking Hunter-Gatherer or something.

(Sidenote: as I recall, Ian Sturrock (think it was you anyway) may have been on the receiving end of me ranting about this very subject at the end of Mandala's Alone event. He happened to ask me why I was veggie (I think) and I went into a pre-emptive grumble about it, assuming he was about to give me the same shit I usually get. At the end of which he said "er... I was just curious actually, as I used to be veggie too" or words to that effect. And I was a bit embarrassed for going off on one)

I think it's because we often have a background in hanging around dirty hippies and other creatures who think it's a good idea to go camping in a field in the snow, who do harangue us about being meat-eaters, so we've become used to pre-emptively brushing off such complaints with offhand comments such as 'yes, I'm an unrepentant carnivore' and having our defences ready.

The meat eaters, as the outnumbering group, really dont need to be defensive. I reckon its cos you're all insecure :-P

Humans have the capacity for rational thought, animals do not.

*grins*

Octopi and Squidgels solve puzzles.... thats rational thought isn't it?

*looks above*

*grins*

Apparently even some vegetarians show the capacity for problem solving....

Well, I am a LARPer, so its kind of a prerequisite that my parents were killed by something I hate... It's Standard LARP Background #1
