| "...the site ownership changed and with it the intention of how the site would be used" Is that the case? (I know why ownership changed, but I thought I'd heard the new owner was "dead keen") It'd be a crying shame to lose Candlestone to LARP. But I admit haven't actually tried to book anything or been over there for a few years.

As far as I know - from five weeks back...
As a lot of people know, the long-time warden there, died last year. When we went to an LT joint Hart-Vipers sanctioned event we found that the previous warden was back looking after the place, along with her current husband.
AFAIK the place has not changed hands. No mention was made by them about it having done so at that time.
The site was in particualrly good condition, and a lot of work had been done on the forestry side of it, with quite a bit of thinning out of timber. This did mean that there were stacks of logs in places, and more visibility in the woods than I was used to. The warden was around quite a lot, keeping loos and washing facilities clean and supplied.
Chatting with her, it seemed clear that their intent was to keep letting it out as a LRP-only site. There was a little discussion abotu work done on clearing bushes (the spikey ones) in the badlands a bit further.
Of course, this was not an official discussion, just chatting, and it was five weeks go, so no guarantees are given as to current accuracy, but I came away a lot less worried than I was when I had heard of the previous warden's death.

| From a second hand but reliable source - The new warden is infact the old warden before Steve took over. Steve was in the process of extending the site when he unfortunatly passed away. I belive he ran a chainsaw course in which people effectively paid him to come and clear some areas The wood was partly to be used to make the new LRP facilities he had planned. The current warden fully intends to keep running the site as pretty much a dedicated LRP site. If they can get the site fully booked for every weekend in the open season, why wouldnt they. They also plan on making improvements to the site. If all is going to plan there should be a few electric points dotted around the site within a few weeks, and some of the building work Steve planned for is still going to go ahead. This information is also a few weeks old but I can't see why it should change in the meantime. The one request that was made, was if you have the site booked but haven't contacted them since Steve's death please do so as he kept a lot of bookings and details recorded in his head and they don't (or at least didn't) have a full list of who was what was when. Candleston with elecky! it ain't nat'tural I tell ye

Does anyone have contact details for booking the site? Had the devil of a time trying to track some down....

| I was at Candleston at the start of May (running the LT Vipers - Harts sanctioned event as mentioned by Old Nick). I spoke to Rory, the Estate owner, about his intentions for the site, and he confirmed that it would continue to be used and developed as a dedicated LRP site. A new site warden has been appointed, David? (I believe, although I really can't be 100% sure if that was his name) and his wife, Elaine (definitely her name), who used to run the site with her previous husband before he passed away. Rory's long term plans do indeed involve putting electricity in, making some more fixed structures, and opening out the Woodland behind the camp (between the dutch barn and the wardens cottage) to extend the site. This may mean that the costs rise, currently at £5 per person per night + VAT, with a minimum cost of £300 + VAT per night. They are now taking bookings for the next season (indeed, we have booked the site for 6/7 Oct 07 ). If you want to contact them about a booking, the Methyr Mawr Estate office can be reached on : 01656 662413 and they will be able to give you a contact number for the new wardens David & Elaine. PS - useful bit of info for anyone using the site in the future - that the Castle has now been fenced off due to its structural instability & fragility . The grassy area out the front is still usable, but the building is now off limits.

According to Andy L (Shards) there are rumours of giving preference to larger groups and/or having smaller groups share the site (i.e. two groups running events at the same time)
