This game seems more to me about forming alliances more than aiming for demi god power status (something that can occur in other games). I can't answer for Allen as to whether it will be possible for players to become that, but it seems to me that skill progression is more about having more advantages, than simply becoming a flange beast.

That's what I'm asking.

Because the system seems to suggest that becoming a Demi-god in powerlevel is both possible and expected.

I distrust hidden advancement systems, because I don't like feeling I may lose a race I never knew I was in. I want to know if the advancement system is a race I can lose.

Don't assume because it's not an issue for you, it's not a deal-breaker for me.

from what i've seen, i didnt think it was encouraging 'demi-god' status, as from what i can see even a new player can drop and kill someone who's been playing for years, that new player could also walk in and build weapons, shields or healing tools etc all at their first event if they choose the appropriate create item skill and the measure of ore on their booking form, then sell said items. Yes that old character may be able to create 5 different things, but being able to create 5 things doesnt make him uber, simply more valuable an ally (which is good for RP).

just how i see it, but maybe im not looking deep enough into some of it?

*is now home from Maelstrom*.

No Simon I do get your point. However, it doesn't quite marry up with my experience of this type of game.

IMHO XP "sweet spots" require a variety of factors in LRP games. Firstly they require comparative progression in quite a rigid way, secondly they require structured opposition that operates in a similiarly level based progressive development and thirdly they need the game designer to have callibrated the progression with a focus on them in mind.

None of these three things were in mind when I wrote Eos.

My experience of this kind of progressive system is that you can get moments when individuals are "first" to a particular set of abilities, items and opportunity, but these are just as fleeting as any other means of empowerment where comparative abilities soon cancel things out, or the circumstances draw too much attention to an individual and cause them to be eliminated. The key is to callibrate the abilities carefully enough so as to empower the player but also so as to not empower them exclusively above others - thereby destroying game balance.

My experience is also that those fleeting moments are usually not accompanied by moments of intention. These tend to occur at other times and often skill progression can hamper them as it increases paranoia.

I think your conclusion is a misintterpretation Simon and that may be my fault as a writer.  I also think we'll never manage to reason out all of the reasons for your conclusion here on a forum, so why don't we book some after time out time at the next event we are both at to discuss it?

Further I would add.

If a downtime system is incapable of offering another attractive focus to players beyond skill progression, then it is a downtime system that is failing at least in part to fulfill its role as part of the game.

I have a question on armour.

Can you use a heavier physrep for lighter armour.

For instance I am looking at some armour that would probably class as medium or heavy depending on how it comes out (its not made yet) or some armour that is definately medium.

Now if IC I can only get hold of a light armour lammie can I attach it to mmedium armour and count it as light phys rep?

Hope that makes sense

Woody,

Yes you can. It is implied in the Armour phys rep section but not made abundantly clear. I will add this to the FAQ when I get chance.

Presumably the armour is rusty or of low quality to count as a lesser type...

OK, some complete noob questions here. I'm a newcomer to rubber sword-variety LARP. I found the equipment section a bit ambiguous:

1. Do I have to have 'crafted' versions of items to gain game benefits from them? The rules on weapons are clear, but what about armour and shields?

2. Are healing tools required for Basic Healing? Are they expended when I use them? Do I also need them for Dress Wounds? Does this mean I need to either have the Craft Healing Tools skill, or access to someone who does to keep using the skill?
