Flannel (5/1/2007) A Clearly labelled and signposted venue run by and for smokers. As far as i can see not one argument you have made relates at all to how such an establishment would be a negative effect to a non smoker. Discrimination with hiring only smokers? sorry i just read 13 pages of this stuff, figured its only fair that i get to respond to something before you go targeting vegans. well i feel better now.

There's no legislation about anti-nonsmoker discrimination. Fortunately there also none regarding discrimination against vegans so we can victimise the smug gits as much as we like.

How do I know this? I work for the Authority, and have had all sorts of training on enforcing the rules. There are proposals before the Council to ban smoking in all areas where drinking is banned (including all parks, nature walks, streets etc.), and if they are passed (as people expect), will have the harshest anti-smoking rules of any Local Authority.
I see... excellent use of police resources.... how are you going to enforce that?
In the same way as most local bylaws... not at all.
Look you can't stop people letting their dogs shit in the park... do you really think you'll stop people smoking?
Heres an idea for a local authority... how about you stop wasting money on unenforcable crap and spend some on actual public services.
Which local authority is this so we can look up these by-laws?
It's being enforced the same way as the public drinking ban, the police will stop and fine people if they see them. Yeah, they might not see them, but it's like speeding fines - you might not get caught, but do you want to risk it?
As for looking up the by-laws, I've tried. The Council's website is shit, and broken. And I was advised by my colleagues that I would get into trouble mentioning the Council in a thread like this (or believe me, I'd be happy to tell you) - so now you can jump up and down on my points, make out I'm a liar and go away feeling all self-righteous, can't you? Good for you. You could be clever, and try to track my location, but that'd be a lot of effort to go to. So save your energy and have a little happy dance.
I'm going to the (clean) pub.

Well the Council that I work for (Nottingham City) have banned smoking on all Council properties including open air. It's meant to apply to council workers smoking in car parks and work yards etc, but theoretically it could be applied to parks, the market square etc. It's a matter of putting things in place and then enforcing them when they want to.

I'm going to the (clean) pub.How about I point out that if you do not make any attempt to publicise a local by law that differentiates from the law of the land you can't enforce it. Information on local By-laws is required to be available to the public. I'm sure your right though Councils regularly get upset by people mentioning that they have by-laws in place. Undoubtedly they'll spend time tracking you down in person for saying that they have banned smoking. Theyd not want that leaking out would they. I suppose they put up signs but you can't tell us where they are either. Gosh what with the current interest its amazing they have garnered no press attention. Ah well at least your answer confirms one thing. With an inability to back up anything you say like that you certainly must work for a council.

With an inability to back up anything you say like that you certainly must work for a council.Shocker. People in Wales ban smoking a bit more. Yeah, I can see that being newsworthy. In fact, I reckon I could probably find out which council it is (to within about 80% certainty), but I don't want to get them into trouble as I reckon they've already said which one on this thread.
There is only overconfidence and terror.
