Right, I'm with Flannel on this now- we could have dedicated smoking buildings- Smoketoriums- if you want a fag go there- if you want to smoke in public wear a space suit. If we put them next to the Crematoriums then the smoke would be less noticable and there'd be less distance to travel fo the hearse, cutting down on congestion and large cars with high emmissions.
I'm sure that was a Judge Dredd story from 30 ish years ago.

Yup - smoking inside MegaCity 1 was banned, apart from inside a particular building (I believe it burnt down?) so cruise ships went out to the Black Atlantic (200 miles offshore) where people could smoke.

Dont listen to me, I don't larp any more.

I agree, properly labeled ghettos for smokers is definitely the way forward.

Put it this way, why do you _want_ to smoke?  What's in it for you?  Bad breath?  Stinky clothes? Impotence?

Do cigarettes make you high?  Do they make you feel good about yourself?  Do they fill you full of energy and want to dance all night?  Do they make you more sociable?  Do they let you just plain feel really good?

Most of it is habit. Then throw in some chemical dependence.

Then throw in the fact that *sometimes* they do taste good. They do relax you - I've heard all the crap about "they just bring you back to a normal state" but perhaps its that change in mental state that is satisfying rather than the level itself. Certainly when I gave up (for about  3 years) I did miss having a cigarette now and again. And there's the social thing - I started again when I was on a really stressful project, working very long hours and having a cigarette was an excuse to take a break. It was also an excuse to stand and chat for 5 mins with people who were too busy to catch at other times - about work related stuff mainly sadly.

But to be honest, I'd say I only enjoy about 30% of the cigarettes I smoke.

Crazy like Croolis-Ulv!

At the risk of stirring up trouble....

I'm a recent quitter (three weeks and still going). This makes me, at the present moment, still rather emotional, prone to anger and terribly nostalgic about nicotine in general. I gave up specifically because I wanted to be ahead of the ban. The ban is good, it makes it easier for me to stop smoking. I don't want to smoke...it's very expensive and I've even heard rumours that it's bad for you.

Why did I smoke? Well, chemical addiction is a funny thing - it makes your brain behave all oddly. I smoked because I was addicted - but the way that manifests itself is that I liked the way it looked, I liked the rebellious streak associated with it, the camdarerie of fellow smokers. I liked the imagery of smoking and also, don't forget - if you smoke you never notice the smell yourself.

Like anything in this world, telling someone they shouldn't do something only makes them want to do it more. When I smoked, people telling me how much they hated smoke made me want to blow some in their faces. The ban will enforce clean air in public places without getting personal to each smoker and raising the heckles. Hopefully, a few more people might even quit.

How do I know this? I work for the Authority, and have had all sorts of training on enforcing the rules. There are proposals before the Council to ban smoking in all areas where drinking is banned (including all parks, nature walks, streets etc.), and if they are passed (as people expect), will have the harshest anti-smoking rules of any Local Authority.

I see... excellent use of police resources.... how are you going to enforce that?

In the same way as most local bylaws... not at all.

Look you can't stop people letting their dogs shit in the park... do you really think you'll stop people smoking?

Heres an idea for a local authority... how about you stop wasting money on unenforcable crap and spend some on actual public services.

Which local authority is this so we can look up these by-laws?

Yeh and people could serve alcohol in them and call them pubs?
