Which system does allow you to walk up, stick someone with a knife and kill them straight off? It's certainly not Maelstrom or Omega? I don;t think it's CP? But if you are talking about hits in the dark and can they work at LT, then yes. Again, there have been lots of them, some of whom post on this board (Please chime in guys)

Stu

You certainly can do that in CP, most players have only one hit and your dagger will do that. They'll be down and dead in two minutes if nobody heals them, sooner if you put some effort in.

Travelling alone at night at CP is not a safe option.

In the LT system. The ritual of peace is only up in certain camps. It is also down  in the ritual and transport circles. So with a little prior planning and preparation anyone can be "jobbed" including NPC's. It just has to be very carefully planned and executed knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the mark and their allies. Preferably keeping the brightly tabbarded Ref's out of view.

Why would you have a ref present when asassinating someone?

I think LT has the best potential for good PvP, but it will often fail to live up to it, as some (most?) players don't go to LT for PvP. The keen PvP types can have amazing fun, but it's hard to take full advantage of it as not everyone present is keen to get involved in PvP, and some are totally against it happening.

PvP tends to lead to winners and losers, and some players are just not set up for that mentality. Sometimes PvP spills out into the PvM heroes, and when they lose they are super unhappy about it (which is why you need a Ref around as an unbiased observer during assassinations, the 'hero' doesn't always dodge the assassin's blade in PvP fights).

Maelstrom has a stated aim of PvP (I'm paraphrasing), so everyone is aware that it can and does happen. In Maelstrom, if a group gets rolled, then I'd hope everyone knew there was a good chance it could happen, that it was an expected part of the game, and for everyone to keep it all nicely in character whilst it's happening, and behave well out of character afterwards. In LT, I know this is not the case, because some players are just not set-up to consider their entire group of faction being wiped out in PvP, and they can get very angry about it, they aren't prepared to lose in this way.

As for whoever thinks that PvP in LT is safe, they are totally crazy. The Ritual of Peace is no more than a speed bump to removing a character you really want to die, and even then the ritual of peace isn't up everywhere, and is only at the main four events. If you get back up again after a PvP assassination attempt at an LT event, then you are pretty lucky.

Steve, you've missed the point. They will die if left, you can do that in almost any system, but they don't die straight off! In LT you could leave them for a longer 10 minutes. or spend 10 secs dropping everylocation and killing them instantly. In Maelstrom, if you have the skill you can mortal them with your dagger, or, more difficult drop them (With no locations not easy) then coup-de-grace them and leave them to die or spend 30 secs and execute them. I believe CP has an instakill rule as well, but I'm not sure what it is.

As other people have said, the RoP is a minor inconvienience if you want to kill someone. all it stops is the "for a laugh people". And the REF is so that if there are any disputes over the kill the ref can adjudicate. If yo udon;t inform a ref what you're doing you just run the risk of the target complaining that you did something to bereak the rules. That said, I also know people who have been killed without a ref present.

The RoP might be a speed bump in terms of taking out an individual but in something bigger like the Gathering battle it has a very limiting effect on the number of deaths. Since part of Stu's argument is that the scale is one of the main strengths of LT PvP I think it is only fair to consider the impact of the RoP in those large sale combats. It does make them less bloody and that does make for less full-on (and IMO rewarding) PvP.

Last time I went (last millennium) to the Gathering, I had no idea what might kill me, what the call 'fatal' meant, what the rules were for dying, etc.

A number of other systems make this a whole lot clearer to all players - a quick skirmish in a bush is just as likely to result in a death as a professionally-executed assassination with ref in tow to make sure everyone understands what's going on.

Course, LT may well have improved its rules literature since then.

On the positive side the rulebook is on the website and has been for a good while. On the negative side you will struggle to get a copy of the rules at an event at the moment as no more are being printed until the new version of the rules comes out (AFAIK).
