| There's probably stuff here somewhere already but I can't seem to find it. Any ideas for representing Computer Hacking? Any ideas entertained!

I posted up the C²:Aphelion hacking system a while back after someone asked for it, but I put it on the wrong board:
http://forums.rule7.co.uk/Topic21173-10-1.aspx
It was designed to avoid any need for RL technology and to work for about 40-60 players.
PD - Brother Farael of the Ordo Dictum Dominus
EOS - Some Raggard Scum, previously Some Arimin Scum
6P - System creator (now retired), Andrei Treune of Clan Suner (for the moment)
RL - Will Robinson

| There have been many ideas postulated on here. You can, quite easily, set up a PC or laptop to have a visual basic program (or even a DOS program) running which requires a password to enter. Someone set up quite a nice little html program which allowed the hacker to type in their level of hacking skill in the password field to get either full access or some of the password given to them. If you prefer not to use real technology you can do it purely as a soft skill. One way to do this is to have the password set (whether it needs to be typed into a real but inactive computer or spoken to a cardboard phys rep or whatever with a ref standing by watching it) and if the players manage to guess it (or work it out from clues in the plot - i.e. 'Hmmmm, Bob, the bloke who set this password, had a dog called Speckles and a girlfriend called Trixie and his birthday was 24th september, 1987. He's an idiot so he probably used...'). In this case, hacking skills allow the hacker to roleplay through what they are doing (I'm usung a dictionary program to do this...) and the ref to give the result based on how well they roleplay and what level they have. You can also have things like puzzles and IQ tests to work through to work out the password. So, complete the suduko puzzle/crossword/jigsaw/answer me these questions 3 OOC and get a clue to the password.

You can see the very simple hacking system I developed here:
http://www.26herbs.co.uk/hackorama/
It's fully documented, and should be easy to modify for your own uses. It's not really suitable for storing or passing on massive amounts of data, but it might provide a starting point for your own ideas.
