I keep inspecting and rejecting unsuitable sites for a small 11 person event I'm running later this year. This is a quick post in case anyone knows of a relatively secluded farmhouse or similar, suitable for a 1930s LRP event?
It would have to sleep 11 people, and not be overlooked so we can run costumed things in the garden. Location would be England or Welsh borders, no further north than Derbyshire, no further south west than Dorset, not the Kent side of the M25. A pretty big area to choose from...
Budget for off peak hire from £500-£800 for a weekend.
Any thoughts appreciated. Or you can email me. Thank you.

| If you weren't so set on it being no further north than Derby, I would have suggested the Mountain Hut. Has all you need but is in Cumbria (right on the scottish borders). There was a youth hostel which was used for an event I crewed at a few years ago which was essentially a rather large house right on the coast. It was on the Welsh coast a few miles south of Aberystwyth. Also, there is candlestone site near Exeter. It has a cottage on it which is included in the hire (for BRR we usually use the cottage to sleep in and Steve uses it as a crew hut while the game happens in the barns but you could easily set play in the cottage and use the barn or toilet blocks as a place for crew to get ready.

| You could try this site http://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/ It has lots of cool places to rent all accross the UK The catalogue will cost £10 I think but you get that back if you book The catalogue is nice as a stand alone book for a roleplay ref. (nice colour pics of old buildings, maps and floorplans) Alot of them will be too small but they do some larger country houses Cost can vary but it depends exactly when you want to run Even if it is no good for the event you are planning it may give you some ideas for the future

Balor - I think you mean Caddihoe rather than Candlestone, which is in South Wales.

Do you have any idea how the Landmark Trust respond to LRPers? Some of those buildings are so perfect for Six Pillars it almost hurts, see.
For example, what would they think of having additional people camping on the grounds? I'd suspect they'd have issues with it.

| I expect they take a dim view of people pitching tents on their nice lawns Any crew you have will need to be either on-site aswell or near by at a B&B As far as LRP goes they would probably be cool with people in period kit on site but you would be best to check first When I last stayed at one of their properties I didn't see any house keepers etc... for the whole time They seem fine with other people visiting (eg; buddies over for dinner etc...) so I guess bringing crew in from the local area would be ok Just let them know that you will be having a weekend interactive period murder mystery or similar and I am sure they will be fine In short, order their catalogue and price list to get a better idea of what they have to offer and then contact them for more details

I've got the Landmark Trust catalogue in my piles of event bits, and it is indeed fabulous, and contains some awesome properties. I've made enquiries about running "murder mystery" style events at their sites and met with approval. (Not sure if these fabulous restored buildings would suit a full combat event though!)
Main issue with their sites is the cost. They are well publicised, rennovated, managed and marketed, and as a result tend to be over the budget of even a fairly dedicated LRPer. Will have another flick through their catalogue though, Paul.

| Landmark Trust properties are a bit pricey but this can vary throughout the year Have you thought about running during the week as opposed to the weekend I agree that the Landmark Trust properties are not going to be much cop for big fight fests You might also need to check out about pyros and blank pistols if you intend to use them Good luck with your site hunt I will post up if any other site ideas come to me

A friend and I ran a larp event at a farmhouse in the lake district in the winter,
http://www.escape-to.co.uk/
These were the guys that we ran it with, they were larper friendly, fairly cheap and where we went matched our 1920's period, it's basically the youth hostels that shut down during winter that want to make a bit of money.
Hope this helps
