Insurrection LRP is a live-action roleplaying game in a dystopian high-fantasy setting. The world itself is one of magic, with orcs, elves and dwarves ruling the roost using their sorcerous capabilities, with humans crushed underfoot as slaves. On the surface, life is very good for most people; they abide by the laws and attract no trouble.

However, the political situation is dire indeed; since the attack by human-rights extremists on the orcs’ most holy site some seven years ago, a new government has formed – the Commonwealth of Elder Races. Ruled by a Supreme Council, the Commonwealth has instituted many reforms, centralised authority, required people to carry passports wherever they go, and generally taken over.

There are many who are not happy with this state of affairs; whether they want to go back to the old ways, oppose the reforms for intellectual or selfish reasons, or are driven by faith to stand up and be counted, there are rebels in the world. Insurrection LRP is their story.

We're a new system, based in the West Midlands, starting in 2007. We're playtesting in March and April, with our first weekend event May 18-20 and a second one August 3-5. For more details, please reply here, or email me on heather@insurrectionlrp.co.uk

---

The playtests will cost £5 each, and will include two linears (play one, monster one) and lunch.  You'll get 3 additional EPs to spend on your first "proper" character.

The May and August events will cost £45 each, with discounts for early booking.  Monstering is free, and we'll feed you into the bargain!

Rules and setting info, as well as more about who we are, is all available on our website: http://www.insurrectionlrp.co.uk

Cheers,

Heather

Was fairly interested till they banned head hits halfway through the rules and implied that other systems were thus less safe.

Ah well.

The rest of it sounds fairly OK.

Banned head hits seem to be fairly common these days. It does not bother me like it used to as all LRP combat is unrealistic/styalised anyway (I still enjoy it of course)

The idea of playing oppressed human freedom fighters amuses me

It certainly wasn't our intention to imply that other systems are less safe!  I was LRPing for about ten years before I encountered a system that bans head hits; now it seems like every one I go to does so.  Aside from completely messing up the way I fight, I think it's pretty sensible, tbh.

While I'm entirely happy to get hit on the head in the course of a decent fight, we took the decision to minimise risk by banning head hits.  We went for a total ban rather than a partial because the partial one's just really difficult to follow and doesn't make a lot of sense to us.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a system where I can indulge my secret head-hitting skills, I'd be most grateful ;-)

Cheers,

Joe

Personally I liked the sound of this, up till I got the end and saw the players are going to be the rebels, not the loyalists fighting to bring peace and order to the galaxy and dealing with the jumped up apes.

That said, I do think it's interesting that while UK larp has moved away from 'classic fantasy' (with tolkienised races) to other settings, the nordic lot have instead gone back and tried to do classic fantasy well. It's good to see people trying this in the UK. I also like the idea that the social material in this larp sounds like it ressonates well with the current political climate.

On the other points raised, what annoys me is not the lack of head-hits but the lack of allowing stab-safe spears (which are a proven tech, having been around for over ten years now) to be used as such. (and then people who insist on charging down spear users, because they know they can't stab with them, then complain that they got stabbed after running onto the spear point of a static weapon simply held in place).

What's the insurrection policy on stabbing spears (and throwing javalins for that matter)?

Thanks for that!  The modern political resonances were a conscious choice; a couple of the team have a history of activism on various issues and even some electoral experience, so building that into the setting seemed like a good idea.  You only write about what you know about.  Aside from giant stompy death robots, of course...

As for stab-safe spears and throwing javelins, I'll need to talk to Oli and Heather about them.  Personally, I'm all in favour; I used to have one (made by 'Kin Cheap) that I loved dearly, until I left it behind at an event and it disappeared.

Will get back to you ASAP on that front.

Joe

Yes...

All three of the Major fests allow Head hits (Curiouspastimes, The LT and I think Maelstrom though someone would need to confirm that.)

Also Cataclysm and any number of smaller systems.

Ive seen a number of experiments with 'No Head Hits' and it generally results in more not less injuries.

This said its only really a personal bugbear because at 6'4" even if a make a horizontal blow at my stomach level it's going to hit a lot of people in the head because they have a tendency to drop into a semi crouch whilst fighting. That and it makes folks with large shields a pain in the arse. I just think it favours midgets thats all....
