Also leaping on the bandwagon and mostly agreeing with the last poster.

I'm a fan of PageMaker; I've been using it since the first edition of VIEW. I suppose it is expensive - unless anyone had a cracked/hooky copy, but who would do such a thing.

I haven't been involved in the pre-press industry since 1998 and from what I've seen and bought a lot of these little laser machines are quite good for proofing, but as a man who has hand collated a few runs of just small scale printing, if I could go down to a handy printshop then I would. Domestic toner prices are not cheap either!

I didn't use to be a fan of PDF At All as some people used it very oddly, but recently I'm converted, especially as a general document to distribute interoperably.
Send out a DOC could result in al sorts of random gack appearing on the screen.
Sending out a PDF should mean they see what you saw.
I don't know what M$ has, but OpenOffice is great for making standard DOCs and then just exporting PDFs all in one application.
OpenOffice rah rah rah!

One thing I do use for a rules system I have is Apache-Forrest which allows you to build a website and AUTOMATICALLY have a quite nice PDF version created in parrallel.
Some geekery and editting XML rather than wysiwyg required....

But I do think LRP is a hobby best enjoyed in a positive state of mind.
If you approach a game with a positive attitude then you're more likely to enjoy yourself there.

There's an open-source product called Scribus, which I've just downloaded. I shall try it out and let you all know how it turns out.

FYI, I've installed this on WinXP/Win2K and Ubuntu (Debian linux) and it seems to work ok.
Not as rich as PageMaker but probably as functional for most users.
I'm preparing the next VIEW with it to check it out.
More news if there is any.

I've produced stuff on MS Word before then used PrimoPDF (free download) to convert it to PDF format

Its quite nice cos you choose whether you want screen or print quality and it does the work for you. Just because I've not really got the time to learn a new DTP package

http://www.primopdf.com/

At some point I'll look into doing proper DTP.

We did consider printing the Brighton Below rules onto brown paper / backs of cornflakes packets / scrap paper. Cheap and fits in with the concept

The new Eos Rulebook is written in Pagemaker. I have Indesign, but I like the simpler system and have a big book on Pagemaker, so I went with what worked.

I'll be posting it up this week.
