Matt Pennington (1/19/2007) Fantastic! Independent verification that I am not in fact insane! That's a relief.
TomJ (1/19/2007)
I think that is a little strong statement to make Matt. I mean there is plenty more evidence than simply if you had been imagining something free with magasine about your level of sanity in other places
Dude, this is the internet, the whole point is to make spurious claims on the basis of scant evidence.

Well i'm working on a LARP rulebook at the momment and trying to output it as a pdf but am having difficulty getting the file size down.
Can somebody offer some advice on which picture format to use to still give descent resolution pictures while lowering the ammount of memmory they take up when embedded into the pdf?
Cheers

I'm not good at graphics, but I know a woman who knows a shit load about them, Daisy who plays one of Havoc's Dogs at Maelstrom. Last time I talked to her she knew more about graphics than I ever knew there was to know. Twas a most humbling conversation. I'd advise looking her up and asking her for a format recommendation (some of the Dogs are usually about on the Maelstrom forum). Unless my memory is playing tricks on me again and I've confused her with someone else, but I'm pretty sure I haven't. If so, then a google search on graphics formats may give you the same result with less effort.
I don't know what .pdf engine you are using but many of them allow you to set a number of options. Make sure that you have set the resolution low, 300 dpi is appropriate and make sure you've set the output to greyscale or black and white. If you haven't this may reduce your file size considerably.

You will need to create a print quality pdf and a internet quality pdf. Unless you want your players downloading big docs, the only was get the sizes down is to reduce the dpi of the images.
Make sure text is not rendered (i.e. not part of an image) before pdfing.
Make sure black and white images are actually set to Greyscale and not CYMK/RGB.
Flatten images.
If you have a choice between vector and raster, choose vector.
... theres probably more tips to help.
For internet docs...
Normally I drop the colour images to about 150 dpi for internet screen viewing and they look fine. I usually dropping the greyscale DPI to 600. Sometimes you have to go beyond this though. Obviously, if you can make it all greyscale, that helps loads.
For printable docs...
300 dpi is right for colour, 1200 dpi+ for greyscale.
People who know more will probably argue but this is what I have found from trial and error.

Taize (1/22/2007) For printable docs... 300 dpi is right for colour, 1200 dpi+ for greyscale.
Hmm for printing off a laser printer I wouldn't generally bother going above 600 dpi. For printing professionally I'd prefer a higher resolution.
People who know more will probably argue but this is what I have found from trial and error. After 3 years of a lot of printing later, I wouldn't argue. Except for the obvious argument I've just stated... I mean other than that I agree with him... Look it's late, I'm tired, I blame the government. And Marios.

Ian Sturrock (1/20/2007) Got it -- thanks Matt.
Ian, if you're going to Viking, email me before hand and I'll bring my Quark books over with me. You can have a butchers and maybe give them back at Maelstrom or whenever.
