| It has been five years since I came up with this on Pagga The Clash combat system. 'taken from the clash of swords' for use in Heroic Combat games. Lrp combat seems to be based on the premis of simulating the varying combat abilities of pc's and monsters by manipulating hits and damage given. Which I presume stems fom Lrp's tabletop origins, which was a familiar system that could be brought ino Lrp. But Lrp is primarily a visual medium. All this simulates is that a hero can be hit more by a monster and fall over later. But thinking of it visually shows its failings. For instance in movies, books and legends which we are overall reproducing the hero doesn't get hit loads but bravely ignore it....they parry, duck, weave, evade and eventually make the killing blow. To simulate these drawn out heroic combats the 'Clash' combat system could be used. The basis is that only after you have parried or dodged a set amount of blows from your opponent may you then aim to hit them and then actually damage them. Sounds strange at first but bear with me..... example; King Lordly of Ankrum vs Orc King lordly has to 'clash' twice before he can hit. Orc has to 'clash' seven times before he can hit. A 'clash' being weapons meeting in a hit and parry, one party dodging aiming to miss etc... orc leaps out and swings at king...king sees it coming because orc knows he cannot hit king yet orcs blow is slow and well placed.....king brings up his sword and parries ......then cuts down missing the orc(on purpose)..... 2 clashes have now been used...the king may attack...... the orc whilst the king is unbalanced hacks again...but aims to hit his shield as he can not yet attack.....however the king has used all his clashes and then retaliates with a swift blow to the orcs leg but the orc gets his shield there just in time(because the orc still has clashes left it may parry, but not hit).... 4 clashes used.... the king slices up across the orc and the orc tries and fails to parry...expiring in a suitable manner.... Now this is a very simplified explanation and just an idea I had on the bus and needs a lot of play testing but I see it being easier to do than to explain with the clashes being countable as a rythem and combat being more staged and theatrical ...giving a chance to people who are bad fighters a chance to play a fighter and more roleplay coming into the actual combat of game.....this system will probably only work within smaller groups of upto 30 lets say and take some getting used to....but it may just work.... just thoughts..... Anybody got any random thoughts on improving this idea? I'll probably get some people together this year to give is a play test.

Hmmmm... I like the idea, but I honestly don't think it will work.
All that will happen is Orc boy will PARRY PARRY PARRY PARRY PARRY until he is on par with Lord Poobar and then it'll turn into a normal LRP fight.
Why would you (from a "how to win a fight" POV) fight any other way?

| An interesting concept, I actually like it, but a few of questions come to mind over its application. Firstly, why would anyone want to parry if they know that they are destroying their 'armour' by doing so, they may as well let themselves get hit as it wouldn't count until their 'clashes' are depleted, hence someone who knows they are outmatched may as well just hold their weapon behind them so they can't be killed until help arrives? Secondly, does this mechanic make healers/casters and the like pathetic or invincable as they often don't carry a weapon? Finally, would someone's 'clash' allowance count if they were caught by suprise, ie. attacked without being aware of danger whether they had a weapon drawn or not? I'm sure there will be more questions, but I've started you off

I think the people have to clash before they can properly attack. Not be hit.
i.e. once the attacker has done his "clashes" he can murderise his opponent. he doesn't have to wait for the opponent to finish thier clashes too.

Tarts right saying that you don’t have to wait until your opponent has used their clashes. Once you’ve used yours up then you can murderise your opponent. Armour could be handled separately in a traditional ‘points’ way. Non combatants can be attacked without the need for the clash system. Just hit ‘em. If a target has their back to you or for any other reason they cannot parry then you can just hit ‘em. Sometimes people may leave themselves so open to attack that to not hit them would look strange so yet again in comes the just hit ‘em rule comes in. These rules are really guidelines for a stage fighting style of LRP combat and would need the players to enter into the spirit of play, with the intent of using the Clash combat to give a more visual/dramatic/theatrical combats. The aim is to move away from assigning monsters hits and instead altering their effectiveness and skill. It’s a basic upgrade to the monster brief of ‘take a few swings then let the player deck you’.

The thing is, do we really need an upgrade to "take a few swings, then let the players trounce you"?
I must say I do like the idea of combat not decending into paggering the crap out of each other until one falls over, but i'm not convinced this is the way to go for the objections I raised above.

I'm personally not a big fan of theatrical-style combat, so I suspect I wouldn't enjoy fighting using this system. It would be interesting to see if it could be made to work, though.
