I haven't seen "ray meres" for awhile, but i'm sure you don't use bark. vines maybe? flexible twigs?
talking of Ray, he never carries any of that crap, and he is clearly the lord poo-bar of ranging.

| How about animal sinew? I do seem to remember that Ray M has used saplings and suchlike to make twine.

| I think animal sinew wouldn`t be much use for trapsnares: animals are likely to be alarmed by the scent. Apart from that, what do people reckon a ranger is? Most roleplayers seem to regard this archetype as an allround outdoorsman, schooled in all kinds of wilderness skills. Whereas I`ve always held that ranger refers to a kind of border patrol, skilled in tracking down people and getting from A to B in the shortest time possible. Scout? Surely. (Army) hunter? Probably. But setting snares and returning to empty them? More likely to hunt the trapper, I`d say. Poaching in the king`s woods? The rope is for tying up trespassers, of course. But yes, lightly packed, aiming to move quickly, able to live outdoors without catching too many colds (hang on, there`s a character hook there ), but likely to use a string of waystations, whether these are logcabins, treehuts or simple hole-in-the-grounds.

Having had the bright idea of using some random wood as string, on account of having no string, I can report that thin twigs and strips of bark aren't bad but are pretty impossible to tie knots in - thankfully my 'shove it through a hole in a bit of paper I'd got as propaganda earlier and hope that sticking it around my head would make it push out more than back, holding it in place' improvisation held surprisingly well.
As for the whole 'carrying kit' thing, I don't think I've been on a linear for a long time where the premise didn't include the possiblity of being home for tea, and I always carry food at water when at a LARP event because there's always someone who has forgotten to eat for the past twelve hours / something interesting happening right when I'm starving and need to go and forage at the burger stall.

Well first off you must understand i merely meant ranger (not Ranger) as in "one who ranges".
I.e. someone who goes everywhere by himself.
for one of the ranging characters, the encumbering equipment is stuff that really must be to hand at all points and is not easily droppable, such as semi-automatic pistol, magazines etc, these have to be really well bound in or they'll get dropped and OOC damaged. Thus learning to melee whilst wearing them. (ok, thats not fantasy, but its the same essential character, and wears the same essential kit, merely 800 years of technology different my problem is presumably using the same mind set for the fantasy version)
Two Infinities... and beyond!
