What do you think of using myspace to market games?

Is there a strong network of LRPers on there?

I have uploaded some promo shots done by the lovely Carrie @ Divine Creations to a myspace account if you have a myspace please feel free to add us and post a comment

Really?  It's working fine for me.  [edit:  at least, it WAS, not two minutes ago- now it seems to have stopped.]

[edit edit: aaand now it's working again.  How bizarre.]

As a taster, it's excellent- very nice photography, and the slideshow thing is cool.  My PC social scientist student hackles went up a bit when there was a photo of a guy holding a knife to someone's throat, with the caption 'the Gypsies', but I'll reserve judgement on that until I have some idea of context.

To answer your question about My Space: I don't have an account, and I don't specifically know of anyone who does, larper or otherwise- I'll read My Space pages if someone sends me the link, but in general I don't tend to network very much with them.

Obviously I'd want more information before forming a proper opinion on it (planned size/ rules/ background/ etc), but as a taster I think this works brilliantly.

WARNING: the information above may have been subjected to dangerously high levels of ignorance.

What do you think of using myspace to market games?

Isn't that something that the youf are all doing on the internet?

The first time I heard about MySpace was reading an article in the FT about it being bought out by someone. Looks like BitchJournal with less posts to me, but then I think mobile phones are for making phone calls from. It's good to be old. Personally I wouldn't bother, I'd put everything on your website and then when the site looks shit hot, start posting the link everywhere. But I think viral marketing is getting people with colds to say how great your game is, so I am almost certainly wrong.

The single picture logo didn't interest me at all, positively turned me off. Don't know why. I guess neither fops nor zombies by themselves do it for me. The "trailer shot" looks fantastic however, Carrie dun dun you proud there. Beautiful work, beautifully photographed. I think the "trailer" is really superbly effective, when combined with the 50 word blurb beneath. It categorically makes me want to play the game right now. Can't think of a better response to marketing than that. Let me give you my money NOW!

And suddenly 2007's LRP year looks so much brighter than it did yesterday... Hurrah.

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

I don't know about MySpace, but there does seem to be a fair few LRPers on Live Journal and a fair bit of LRP event pimping occurs on there.

Isn't Myspace used by teen goths trying to have sex with other teen goths?* I know a few people pimp their wares on it, but it does seem to be a mainly younger generation thing. Or maybe I'm just old and jaded.

One thing about MySpace advertising is that alot of work filters will automatically block MySpace, so your own website is much more likely to get through.

Still, I guess it can't do any harm?

*actually, that sounds awesome. Excuse me while I set up an account: lestat@myspace...

I say go for it, if you can and you have time for it use livejournal.com, deviantart.com and Flickr to try and get the word out to each of their different demographics.

Livejournal has a lot of subculture style people, while Myspace has a similar young demographic but it's more 'mainstream' a direction most Larps don't go in when they try and sell themselves.

And as you've got some great photos, stick them up on DeviantArt and Flickr you might get some crossover once people see the pictures.

Thank you for your comments,

Im glad that you like the promotional material Matt, Carrie did do such a fantastic job to sum up the atmosphere.

We will be uploading the photos onto the main site with a few others over the next couple of weeks with some more information shortly before the system release.

Thanks for the tip Mark...i hope your all recovered from the other weekend never seen you so rushed!

Anybody know of any other sites apart from those listed?

Neil

There is a UK LRP comm on LJ which a few people on here are signed up for.

I have tended to ignore Myspace due to the aforementioned teen goths though I have recently heard that a number of small bands use it to advertise and also publish advanced MP3s of upcoming tracks so I may pop along and have a look.

If there isn't a massive LRP demographic on Myspace, there surely cannot be any harm in trying to force one to exist. If you create it, they will come... and probably bitch about it at you, spam you, call you names, troll about how LRP was better in their day and so on...
