| Mine would have to be Everquest, entering Unrest for the first time with a group of equally inept newbs... it was a terrifying experience, followed by the obligatory three hour corpse run.....

Chewy (11/11/2008) Any game I play and my mate Blaine sitting behind me, Any quiet moment, or intense music moment, he normally slaps me across the side of the head and screams at me to make me jump.....Its not nice Lies, I do things like that. He's making it up
Bloody Vampires! Did it ever strike you as strange that wherever monsters are stirring up trouble, that's where you'll find the most treasure? Why can't there ever be a big haul in a safe place?

Resident Evil 4 where the townsfolk eventually become such a large lynch mob that there's no way to defeat them so you run away, but hiding won't help since there's lookouts on the roofs of the shacks and when they do track you down you're inclined to send Mr. Commando Pants up a ladder, but then they all start climbing up it one by one after him so you notice there's a QTE to kick the ladder down but the enemy is not a couple of slobbering zombies and so have the sense to prop the ladder back up and commence attack [while a slovenly old bag yanks an axe out of some half-cleaved log and decides to heft it at you instead]. Eventually you jump from rooftop to rooftop and escape, only to come face to face with a chainsaw wielding maniac, his face obscured by a potato sack with a singular eye hole from which he projects obscenities at the player in Espaniol. Chainsaw death or mob death ? Well, Lyon bursts through the window of a cottage instead and scrabbles around in some drawers for an impromptu weapon and luckily finds a shotgun which he plugs the chainsaw warrior with three times directly in the chest. Chainsaw Warrior spasms on the floor, gibbering in a pool of black ichor.
You're home free and about to heave the town gates open to get the hell out of there when you hear the familiar whine and rattle of a chainsaw as bride-of-leatherface carves you from the left-hand shoulder down to the right-hand kidney.
And this is all within the first five minutes of the game.
Now I think about it, the encounter with the giant eel is far more panic-enducing but not nearly as memorable.

For me it’s got to be System Shock 2 – only had the demo but it scared the absolute shite out of me whenever I triggered the alarm and the shuffling moaning sounds started to get nearer..never had the courage to go out and buy the full game.
Just finished playing Halflife 2 and the abandoned prison chapter really got the hairs on the back of my neck standing up – even though there was hardly anything attacking me for most of it I had to check every cell I passed with a flashlight just to make sure there wasn’t some hideous monster hiding in it. Finding the CCTV screens and seeing what was happening elsewhere in the prison also added to the scare factor! The game had some pretty scary moments dotted throughout it, Ravenholme being worthy of its own mention but for me it was the prison that took that particular biscuit.
I have to say I never found Oblivion very scary – maybe that’s because I found a helmet that gave me night vision right at the beginning – high stealth score and Ye Olde Magicale Nighte Visione Goggles meant that the dungeon monsters generally found themselves getting surprised by me!

Ick (12/11/2006)
Did anyone here try play Call of Cuthulu, Dark places of the earth ? I had to give up in the end, the escape from the hotel requires near perfect timing, and what with sound effects and image distortion, I kinda keep working myself up to the point my chest starts to hurt. I wrote it (I worked for Headfirst), does that count? Sorry... yes the hotel escape sequence is quite hard, you only have about 10-30 seconds to complete most tasks. I think the game that unnerved me the most was Dungeon Master, especially the Ghosts on Level 8.

| I thought about this a bit actually and at the end of the day, nothing beats the sheer terror of the sound made by Golden Scorpions in the original Dungeon Master game. (I had the Amiga version) Made all the more terrifying by the early 3d engine as you desperately tried to work out where they were coming from..... That made me very nervous and since then I think ive become used to being shocked.......

| Bioshock can be a bit creepy in places. And just been playing Left 4 Dead, which can be pretty hairy when a horde of zombies start climbing over the chainlink fence and start sprinting towards you.
