Have to agree that Silent Hill made me jump more than any other game, whilst still managing to be so much more than just a sequence of fright moments. I also agree with Daggerfall, mainly because it was so immersive at the time.

| One of the older games that scared me was space hulk. Very claustrophobic, and very scary. There's not a lot in games that scares me, mainly 'cos I find a lot of it has been done before..

========= =SPOILERS= ========= (Highlight text to display)
FEAR There is the moment where you're making your way through the industrial area, fairly near the start. There are pipes and tunnels and it's all very dark and scary. You haven't fought for a while, and you're starting to get jumpy. There's a ladder in front of you, leading down into the darkness - you reach for it, put your feet on the top rung and turn around as you move down - and standing in front of you is *The Girl*. Just for a second. Just long enough to make you go 'holy crap!'. So you gingerly continue down the ladder, rather scared now - and as you reach the bottom, still on edge, you turn to walk off. You flick to your left to look down the corridor - and there's someone standing *right* next to you, filling your screen directly in your path, who explodes into shreds and flakes of weird black mist. And laughs, faintly. Aaaaagh!
Silent Hill 4 For some reason, the bit that really did it for me was walking into my room the first time there was a presence there. Calmly wandering down the corridor into the living room, and suddenly everything's exploded into loud low roaring, and the screen's gone red, and you panic and try to turn to leave but it won't go away and it's horrible and you can see your life draining away and you're desperately trying to escape...

| Did anyone here try play Call of Cuthulu, Dark places of the earth ? I had to give up in the end, the escape from the hotel requires near perfect timing, and what with sound effects and image distortion, I kinda keep working myself up to the point my chest starts to hurt.

Thief 3, The Cradle. Spooky abandoned former orphanage and insane asylum. Apparently devoid of any hostiles - until the corpses of former patients get up, howl like banshees, and try to claw your face off.
My other half still mocks me for screaming like a girl at that particular juncture...

| I actually tried picking up Project Zero again the other day. Had to turn it off after about an hour due to being creeped out too much. I actually bought the second one recently. Don't know why cos I'm never going to play it. Its just going to sit there on my shelf and taunt me for being a wuss

I challenge anyone to try doing any of The Suffering games without a serious case of dry-mouth...alcetraz-meets-silent hill.
Any moment of becoming lost in the maze of cellblocks, watching your torch run down just as you hear the tink,tink of bladelegged freaks coming for you out of the darkness, then having your view blitzed by a hideous psychic vision flash across the screen. Now that upsets your nethers....
- Come to Riftworld:the sun never shines, tomorrow is not a better day, but you can drink and swear all you like. That's when we attack.-
"Now let's try expanding the parameters of this and introduce...a screaming baby."
"Was his head always that big and red?..."
