Well, i have a few, ranging from meeting the first Liche in Daggerfall to the whole of Realms of the Haunting.

BUT......

i think one of the spookiest and most spine chilling moments in a game would have to be the haunted ocean house mission on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Even if I play it now after beating it several times.....that place gives me the creeps LOL. it's like being slapped right in the middle of the Shining film what with the toys, ghostly apparitions and atmospheric sounds and voices.

So, what games or moments in games have spooked others out?

I'd agree that the Ocean House is creepy as hell

There are a couple of moments in the Silent Hill games that have made me go "Yaaaaa"

However, the Project Zero series has me hiding behind sofa's. Seriously I can only play it during the day, and I've yet to actually finish one cos I have to turn it off after about half an hour

Alien vs Predator 2 : Marine Campaign

Especially level 2:
You don't even see an alien until about 2 thirds of the way thru, but its the vents clanging open, and stuff falling down, along with the radio transmissions from your team mates scared the crap out of me the first time I played it.

I especially liked the following tranmission.

Scared voice "...Oh god, please tell me thats just a boot..."

About a min later.

Relieved voice "...Hey, it's just a boot.."

Maelstrom - Malachi Dante - Now an Independant Trader

First time I played AvP was FPS perfection for jump-out-of-your-seat shock.

The opening scene, in a dark room with mirrors around me. I see my reflection and think 'this has cool graphics, let's go kill an alien or fifty'. I fire a few rounds of my (didn't realise it would be so precious) ammo to test it out, and head off into the darkened corridors carefully. Five long minutes of nothing later, and my mind is racing. The whole place is silent except my footsteps on the metal floor. There could be an alien around any corner, but my motion tracker shows nothing except for that spooky pulse sound it makes to imitate your heart.

Then out of nowhere a massive hissing sound explodes to my left and my motion tracker goes nuts. I jump out of my seat and my heart skips, but I spin with lightning reflexes and unload an entire clip towards it. Everything goes quiet again, and I lookto see that it was just gas escaping from a pipe, laugh to myself and reload. But that's not it. As I'm reloading I don't see my motion tracker, and BOOM, an Alien appears from nowhere and rips my throat out. Scared the living crap out of me, thanks to the anticipation of the hunt, the false alarm and then the real shock.

I've just remembered - you're boring, and I've got legs!

The Original Freespace - first mission encountering the Shivans. Scariest by a long way for me.

You're at war with an alien race - the campaign has been going long enough for you to get used to the even sides. Armoured fighters, simple lasers.

You're on a mission to intercept an enemy attack, you scramble up heading out to kick ass. You hear the radio reports from the distressed freighter convoy as they get attacked, then one by one they and the enemy start disappearing from the radar.

Then you get these vague blurs appearing on the radar as the Shivans who've wiped out everyone approach you. You can't get a lock - they have shields - they make this horrid screaming noise if they get near you - and they wipe out your squadron around you (and you if you're not careful).

Its 3am. I'm on headphones playing Myth - The Fallen Lords in darkness in my parents house downstairs. Its the second mission where you have to take a force of soldiers and archers to a village that hasn't been heard from in weeks.

Ambient noise from the trees and wind in the game matches the sounds outside. Its nighttime in the game too, and my force is picking its way carefully into the village.

Suddenly one of the soldiers says "What was that?"

I look on the horizon and see a man limping towards the patrol. I quickly select four soldiers to walk over and see what he is.

They get within two feet and....

BOOM.

He screams and explodes sending body parts everywhere, the ground ripples with the shockwave and I all but have a heart attack. The soldiers are bits of body all over the ground.

Then I scan round and see there are eight more of them approaching from all sides... we're trapped and have no hope of the expected rescue or welcome we came for.

Never thought a computer game could scare me...lol

AvP fantastically scary game as the marines at least... I wont repeat what has already been said. Although the motion tracker should be renamed "Scarometer".

System Shock 2 has some of the creepiest sounds, especially in surround sound, Ive ever heard in a game. Ghoul type mutants searching for you as you hide in the dark with no ammo, as they tell you what they want to do when they find you. Made me really on edge.

I found Doom 3 very good at building atmosphere and scaring you, again with the false alarms, sound, low light and the misdirection etc as the above two. However i found the magical "spawning" bad guys of the game frustrating and stopped playing after a while. It did get you really on edge though.

Cant beat the experience of the first Resident Evil game either, remember the tension?

There was a level in Max Payne as well that was all creepy and surreal, with trails of blood and children crying... Not nice.

Also who can forget the intro to the first Half Life, one of the first wtf intros to a game?
