From where I stood it was certainly emotionally intense...for some characters. I would agree that enlarging the number of players naturally has an effect on the game, but I don't think it will dilute the horror. If anything, it'll get more complex.

As for being NPC led, re the formation of the Council: I stand up and say that that was entirely me playing Usta (I like to pretend I'm a player and thinking on my feet. Believe me, it wasn't in the brief. Usta wanted to keep the peace with the Cofflungs, sure, so the whole reason for being there didn't get blown out of the window. I just didn't expect the players to, well, play so nicely together. It was too easy. I'm still shocked (and hoping there will be some kind of friction generated by the various members eventually). No-one challenged Usta. Was I using my Teacher voice?!?

The PC's are always left to their own devices. We can't force the characters to do anything. You always have a choice. OK, it may be Death or Plotcake, but it's still a choice. And plotcake can be very yummy. Ask Trev and Niel (amongst others). Get noticed, I mean, really noticed and you get personal stuff written for you. That's what Riftworld is about. Rewarding hardworking roleplayers. The more you put into it the more we get out of it *grin*.

There was deliberate herding of characters to stay and get what we came for. There wasn't much resistance to leaving any assumed Xadacian hostages in the area, wherever they may be; OK, some talk but no action. The PC's could have organised themselves into a group despite Usta's barked commands and gone off anyway. I'm not sure if it was because they actually respected her authority IC or if the PC's were being rather sheepish OOC. Sorry if my comments are heavily Usta-centric, but that was my point of view this event.

'Lost Property' is the rebirth of Riftworld. It takes time for IC relationships to form. It was quite quick in the beginning because of the small numbers (we had 5 PC's, one of whom didn't survive). But now with a few more people little groups are beginning to emerge. Take the Nanolords, for instance. It was good to see them getting together, naturally. I was surprised that the Citiers got on with the Cyberate quite so well. We'll see how the various relationships start to pan out next event.

Oh, I'd say everyone gets something, often as a result of their background and certianly once they've survived an event and we've seen what the character is like in play. It may not always have your name written on it for all to see, but we try to make damn sure that everyone get's a slice of the doom cake.

'Course, there are a few quick and easy shortcuts to ensuring that you get an extra large slice

Quite a few of us wanted to go after the Xadacian prisoners, the reason we didnt was that the general discouragement from Usta lead me to assume it was out of scope for the event! Some of us are picking this up in downtime.

The beginnings of things are definately there already... at least from my point of view. I've already formed my opinions of quite a few people and I'm expecting some good arguements along the way. In most cases, I know what I like and what I don't like and the last event certainly gave me an interesting push to further that.

The horrible stuff isn't just "out there", it's in certain players hands too.

Tempted to say more about that but I think I'll save it.

I fell victim to a little bit of that emotional intensity which led to a very embarassing moment or two... will be interesting to see how that plays out...

Well, from the nanolord quarter the big 'do we give him what he wants' question had been answered way ahead of being told to make a desicion. On the basis that we'd come to a consensus that frankly, it didn't really matter at all.

The 'Bellraine - you're the highest representative here' comment got snickers all round, and we were 'tagging' responsability with one another when one had to go off and do something else.

So the representative thing wasn't quite as dictat in our corner.

With the Xadacian prisoners, from my point of view the thing stopping us going after them was having no idea where they were! - same with Shale's camp, which I assumed was the same place.

Usta's council was pretty much down to the PCs own decisions. I didn't think it was a case of herding by NPCs.

From my point of view (I'll not quote back the original comments, it'd take too long):

I kind of assumed Usta was a mainly player character - with NPCish bits to basically make sure we stayed until Sunday and give us somewhere to sleep - but I found it was her and Lyria who came over IC as the group leaders and so Jenna, not knowing any better, assumed it made sense for them to be were organising things. As for the prisoners, I assumed it would be doable if we pushed, but it didn't seem reasonable for my character to do so ("Lets go charging out to find some danger! In the dark! Yay!"  - possibly not Jenna's thing). Hadn't occured to me to think otherwise.

Oh, while it may or may not have been intentional, I found some bits of the event really affected Jenna, so it did seem pretty personal at times. As regards Klaus, as Bacon said it was clearly messing with the older characters in a good and fun way, but was a bit harder to interact with as a newbie as we weren't allowed to kill it and didn't know what to say to it. Would have been nice if there were something else going on at the same time, but that was the only point when it ever felt the event wasn't inclusive (I don't think I'm the only newbie that fell asleep at that point) and I think it was an important scene to do.

I freely admit I find it hard to dislike characters for long because their race and mine generally don't like each other. Jenna'll freely accept that all psykers are freaky and dangerous, but if one's trying to be likeable and keep her alive, she'll like him. Its hard not to. I expect though with so many clear personalities among the PCs, conflict will come up at some point. There wasn't really much in the way of "generic fighter #3" among the player group, which was lovely to see, and generally means that people will clash at some point along the line.
