I'm not sure if this is even fesible but consider the system used to score hits in fencing is done by electronic means. the weapon has a very low current flowing through it which scores a hit when it makes contact with an opponent.

Theoretically I would imagine there is a way to treat the top layer of a latex weapon to get it to mimic this, combine it with a lasertag harness and some form of conductive bodysuit and you could theoretically have a fully intergrated guns and melee combat system.

More reaslistically you will end up with lots of broken electronics, half a fencing kit and complaints from the neighbours about your attempts to animate your creation with lightning strikes.

Nerf?

Guns go bang (OK then, guns go POP)
You get hit by something hitting you
Its easy to get the guns, so the game can scale up
Safe(ish) ammo, so not much need for face protection
Short range, so your Kbar/axe/shortsword will still be needed
No need for expensive gear
Not much of a problem with current gun law
No insta-gibb

That looks like WIN all round

How do you want your system to feel? Do you want gun combat to be the norm? Does everybody and their dog have an assault rifle? Are guns rare and expensive, or restricted? Do you want long range sniping to be effective?

I'd personally really like to use nerf guns in LRP, but if you want a sci-fi game where guns are realistic and effective at range, they wouldn't do it.

If you want guns to be effective and realistic, I'd say airsoft. This does potentially limit your game's appeal - some folk will be put off by having to buy new toys, but the prices of airsoft guns has come down alot over the past few years.

If you want gun combat to be non-dominant, with a fair amount of hand to hand, then i'd say point and click or airsoft with limited ammo.

Something I think needs mentioning is that the "lasertag harness" that has been mentioned a couple of times consists of two sensor domes and a control box, connected by a couple of wires. That's it. The Quasar-style plastic harness arrangements aren't really connected to Dropzone-style lasertag, and the size of the sensors doesn't affect precision really (the IR beam spreads over distance, so while at 5m you'd probably have to shoot someone at least in the vicinity of the sensor, at anything longer you're pretty much guaranteed to score a hit if you're aiming squarely at the enemy).

The Aphelion ruling on sensors is that you need to have one on your front and one on your back. That's it - so there's huge amounts of room for mounting sensors on armour, on helmets (very popular from photos I've seen), on monster costumes, and so on.

The new monthly Steampunk game Orichalcum uses Nerf to what appears to be great effect.

Upon hearing this in a previous thread I did do a quick search for it. Where is it based?
