both the event prices and the refs insistance that they were the only people who ran 24 hour time in put me off,

Hmmm yes, the latter would be utter utter bollocks.

Personally I think that if FR have a player base that will pay that price, then the players clearly believe they get value for money. So good luck to them.

Very true, you only have to look at the prices HeroQuest charge and they have been running nigh on 20 years, so they must be doing something right.

Hire great venues, pay the crew, provide food, get decent costume and props, buy SFX, allow the party use of a car, hire hotel rooms and once.... fly them abroad in the middle of the weekend. Mind you you really need to have a rep for providing value for money or people will not come.

When you've done all of that email me as I have several people, including myself, who would be very keen to go.  Unlike the last one we attended, hopefully you wouldn't have to remain anonymous for fear of people having a go at you for making a profit...

Oo.... where did you go... what kind of system was it (I assume modern day stuff....)

Thats interesting... the main instigators the old MORTIS were talking about running another one of their modern day Cthulhu stylee jobs.

Potentially including somewhere in Europe as a location... more likely we'll run an day/overnighter first one weekend in this country to see if the rules still work and try out the new players before planning the 'biggy'.

Possibly run the overnight next year around April sometime and see how it goes...

Do you want to PM me an email for yourself and others who might be interested?

(It's not guaranteed to happen though as we all have Jobs now and less spare time.... but its looking more likely than for has for the past couple of years.)

what suggestions do you have in the way of great venues? I know of a few that aren't scout sites but we have a reasonable site budget generally so would be definitely keen to hear of more.

I'm dubious about the hiring of hotel rooms or flying people abroad but thats probably because I don't know the event setup/plot which justified it.

the rest we do anyway. Apart from pay crew. New, less obvious ideas please!

Flannel,  it was high fantasy, set in and around a castle in Europe over 4 days, there where 10 of us and it cost £750 each, and while price isn't always associated with quality we all thought that was cheap for what we got.

Well as someone who has been running and attending full 24 hr time in events for the past 18 years, it is indeed. however he didn't quite seem to grasp that. Depsite myself and a friend saying "Yes we run events like that" he'd reply
"but no you don't this is fully time in for the entire game, you even sleep in character"

"Yes we run events like that"

"but no one is out of character event the refs have npc"

"Yes we run events like that"

add infinitum

i figured if a ref was unwilling to listen on such a basic level then they'd be unlikly to when it came to characters tuff and my game requirements.

Like I said though they do have a following and they are willing to take the gamble to run is semi proffesional so greatluck to them.

to be honest what prompted my posting was that I couldn't see any obvious expenditure of cash in their photos.

eg the last event we ran we had

  • 30 monsters in matching printed tabards, with matching banners
  • lava monster
  • 6 wraith types in robes and glowing green eyes
  • 12 monks in matching robes, hoods, scarf things that I can't remember what they're called with banners to match
  • ritual circle built for that event
  • large puppet spirit (borrowed)
  • smoke machine, UV cannon

among other things. Many of which show up in the photos of the event. We also use more expensive sites. And we charged about 2/3 what they charge for their last event, so I was expecting to see twice as many things, or at least more, which I could then steal ideas from!
