OK, I would like to think i'm reasonably smart, and can figure out ways to advertise, but then you wonder if you will get the interest and the players. Just thought it might be nice for myself, and others to discuss ideas for getting your cool system idea to the masses.

Thus far i have a website, linked from this forum, I have a couple of basic posters to distribute to gaming stores, with a graphic designer working on a shiny new poster for me. I have agreed with my local store to send out flyers with the relevant mail order stock, and am preparing a  mailshot to several LARP societies.

then you have moral questions, do you post on other systems forums? is it sporting, in most cases you are not in direct competition, and I checkd all opther system dates before setting mine, but some people will think you are poaching...

anyhow, what are other peoples thoughts and Ideas?

EOS - Garak - G - ready orc..

you are starting to sound reasonable.. time to up my medication.

Before posting on another system's forums about your own game, I'd contact the organisers and ask if it was ok. Apart from coming across as a reasonable person, you also get to have an email exchange or chat with someone who organises events, and just might organise a few people to come to your game if it sounds fun and you come across credible enough.

The biggest reason I don't go to events which are advertised is that for me they give the wrong information. They tend to hammer on about background and setting, with perhaps some details on the location of the site, date and cost..

I want to know the following about any system I go to, which usually means I need to hear good things word of mouth before I go:

What size the event is in player and crew numbers, roughly.
Will it have complex rules or be more freeform and rules-lite.
Will people be encouraged to stay in character.
That it has reasonable indoor sleeping accommodation.
What costume is required.
Will there be decent standards of safety.
Will the ref and crew be working hard all weekend to make it fun or just lounging about.
Are the people who are going a decent crowd, or is any idiot with a chequebook coming.

Freshers fair used to be the major recruiter in Cardiff. Colleges and unis are a good place to start. You might get a few members of their rpg societies see the advert in the gaming shops but its unlikely they will bother taking a flyer to show others who might be more interested. Best bet is go along to one of there sessions or send their president an email requesting him to mention it.

Also, I suggest attending all the RPG clubs... let them see your friendly and then hit them with the info after they like you. Yes, it takes time out your week but hey, if you want more members, spend time looking.

You might find that you only get one to start with but if your game is up to scratch, their mates might follow suit later.

Another idea is to create a self advertising scheme that will make your player based recruit for you. Have quite a few ideas in action at a time... e.g. an offer like 'bring a new player and get a free day event' or as trusted players to drop some flyers off for you in their area in return for a free day event etc.

Lastly, involving the players in how the club is run will help keep them coming back and will save you work. Ask players to help you flyer and put up posters. In total, you'll likely cover a large area. Ask what ooc skills they have that might help the club. Quality can sell itself.

Over on the LRP alliance theres a post by the guy who is running the Foriegn feilds LRP kit fayre in Feburary 2007, and is offering a 3m promotional table/stand for LRP systems to plug thier game for FREE.

Check it:

Foreign Field LRP Kit Fair 2007

PaulBavill writes "Latest Updates in the Progess of the Kit Fair. I opening the offer of a free 3 metre promotional pitch to LRP systems who can man one. Places are limited so if you want to promote your system for free then please get in touch:"

It might be something to consider as a cheap way of advertising....

Go to other events. Take leaflets. Don't forget to pack your enthusiasm.

If it is a large scale event, distribute leaflets to traders and passers by in OOC areas (make sure you get permission from the traders and organisers of the event).

If it is a small scale event, ask the organisers if they plan a debrief (a short chat with all present at the end of the event - mainly to thank the crew and to tie up loose ends) and if they do, ask if you can do a quick plug. Most organisers are happy for this, especially if it is a recipricol arrangement so that they can do the same at your event.

Matt P once gave some very sound advice about promotion. Make it as easy for them to book your event as you can. If it is easy for them to book then they will do so. If there is effort then they may think 'Ooooh! Cool event! I'll book for that later...' and then never think about it again. One way to do this is to put booking forms on the reverse side of your leaflets with an address they can be sent to. This often tempts people to fill it in there and then and give it to you with the money...

Hiffano, you say you have a website.....where is it? Bung a link in your signature on this forum. Also, set up a LJ for the game, quite a few players have Live Journals and it's simple for them to bung your games LJ on their friends list.

Hope this helps.
