I think Jack Straw is making an ass of himself to take the heat off the next Labour PM hopeful, whoever that may be...

Personally I feel that cracking down on hoodies and balaclavas, but not cracking down on veils is hypocrisy.
There's a lot of guff about how western women have to cover up in Muslim nations, and how we should have similar cultural reinforcement here.
As someone from an atheist point of view, I say fuck em and their beliefs. I feel threatened by women with their face covered because they are probably holding bombs in their teeth, right?

Straw has no right to tell people how they HAVE to dress... it's a free country, after all, more-or-less.
OTOH, he didn't tell them how they HAVE to dress -- he made a polite request that when they came to visit him, in his place, they remove veils. When in Rome, get a fuckin' toga, right? If you go in the house of a Muslim and are asked to remove your shoes, it's plain bad manners to keep them on. Likewise, if you go to Straw's surgery, and he asks you to remove your veil, you should either remove it, or keep it on and expect to be perceived as rude, or leave.

| I can't remember the last time a woman in a veil held up an off license- so while I hate the idea of stigmatising young people for the way they dress, there was at least a non discriminatory reasoning behind it. This is just more rascist crap.

Andy,
How can it be racist to ask people to conform to your house rules? It's not like he's asking her not to wear a veil in the street, just when she comes to visit him.
If I ask visitors to my house to wear a special Atlantean charged spirit bangle while they're on the premises so as to keep out hostile energies, they can at least humour me, even if they think I'm a frothing lunatic and if their own religious beliefs don't include energies, spirits, charges, Atlanteans, or indeed bangles.
If I run a nightclub with a strict dresscode, I will turn people away for not looking smart enough (or goth enough, or whatever).
This is at least as much about the freedom of a property owner/occupier to set house rules as it is about the freedom of individuals to dress how they want to.

| I doubt he'll be asking nuns to uncover their heads if they visit.

His rules, though, innit? I don't believe he was asking Muslim women to uncover their heads, anyway -- just their faces.
