anyone have access to a 3d printer that they would be able to print something out for me (not massive and can pay for materials as necessary)

Can you afford to just go to a professional prototyping service? According to Wired magazine & Mondo 2000 and all, we should have had affordable domestic CAD/CAM by now... a quick google for CAD/CAM prototype delivery turned up this place:

No idea of the price though.

prices start from £100 per print depending on how much they have to mess with the model to get it to work. (at other places I've phoned - haven't looked at the link you posted yet)

some places are charging £200+

I know some colleges have these printers so was kind of hoping....

as it is, I may still go down the commercial route but I really need to have a justifiable reason rather than I just fancy playing with it. Which still might be enough at some point hehe.

the prices i know of are about a 100 pounds for a rather small object, say about the size of a pint.
i just wander what it is that cannot be hand made for tenth the price.
and if it is something geometric or technical, maybe there are other ways of producing it, which can be much cheaper (maybe even free).

Yeah, I was thinking the same as Sagy -- try hand-making it, or making it in a mold.

http://mutr.co.uk/ have stacks of mold-making kit, smart materials, etc....

ah the point is to make something I can then cast.

Its for making a dagger - and as I want just a few millimetres of foam on either side of the core, I need to get the moulds absolutely spot on (ie one mould for core, one mould for outside)

I don't want to use a standard core - I want to try a relatively hard rubber core thats shaped to some extent to the shape of the dagger.

So £100 is worth it, ish, for something I can make a mould off - and hence produce several. I agree its not worth it for a one-off item (and if this wasn't for a weapon I'd probably sculpt it in clay and cast)

well, if you have the CAD model, all the CAD programs i know let you create a mold of the model. so you can have the mold itself prototyped for you. this will save you time and material, but my cost more to produce.
anyways, if you have the model you should just start sending it to rapid prototyping companies, get a more
percise pricing. maybe it is not as bad as you think.
note- there are several different methodes for this, some cheaper than the others. try consulting the companies for the appropriate method.
