CAIMHIN (5/24/2007)
Flannel (5/24/2007)*nods* and Cthulhu seems to be experiencing a revival at least in the circles I know. Perhaps because there is no real online alternative... I dunno.
I agree, we've actually gained quite a few players for our one off Cthulhu LARPS from the local murder mystery set (quite big up here recently - and already psuedo-LARPers...), and a few for table top from the local board gaming scene (quite big up here as well, I blame the long dark winters and an in ability to get on the computer or watch tv due to children hogging them) since the release of Arkham Horror.
I do think that Arkham Horror is a beautiful stepping stone for board gamers to get a taste for tabletop roleplaying. And vice versa, perhaps.

| Firstly -The comment of online frineds being fake - na ah I'm currently finding floor sapce for the guild who are descending upon me over the bank holiday. All met through MMORPGs - been 'friends' for 7+ years fake or not online stuff can produce links which are solid. -- any how enough of that. I think finding a TT genre that is apt for the time Sci-Fi currently being boosted due to things like Firefly and Serenity and the like. But again - as it always was- its the image of being a roleplayer, which is stopping new blood joining, is part of the issue. Running the Summer scheme for some looked after children were renaming the LRP event open air theatre to try and disguise it. I believe it will be one of those interests that will be a sneaky hobby

This is rather like "monopoly will die out, because everybody's playing Charades".
Tabletop and computer RPGs are wildly different breeds. Despite all efforts to the contrary, computer RPGs are, on the whole, just --Gs. You're not sitting around a table storytelling with friends; you're sitting at a computer calculating who can DPS the most to take down a particularly tricky boss, before someone else goes and does it. You're not having a story crafted to you. It's very different.

You're not having a story crafted to you Through I'd argue that isn't roleplaying either. There is computer roleplaying if you can find it. Certain RP-enforced NVN servers for example.

I've tried online rpgs once, and hated it.
I've been rping (almost litterally) all my life, and find the social and creative aspects to be some of the best parts, and I find an internet link a poor substitute for a bunch of mates round a table having a laugh. The rpg groups I attend are always finding new members, and hardly any of them play online.
