ok i havnt read any of this so youl forgive me if this is a copy of anyones. but im very lazya nd busy i jsut wanted to say my bit. jsut as a pre-point. i ahve adhd and have an adictive personality so maybe i was taken in a little more than others but not by much by what ive seen of 'normal' peopel in the same situations
Online rpgs are evil soul destroying money sucking beasts created by satan himself as a new and inventive way to stick it to god and everyone else whos around. (please no religious debates im just emphasising my hatred) they are the purest form of evil and more adictive than liquid crack, ciggarettes you name it these are worse. they shoudl be banned as dangerous and unsafe weaposn and the poeple who created them put on trial for mass genocide of peoples lives (not actualy killing them but everything about them that makes them interesting)
ok now ive got that out of the way ill explain why i hate them
i was hooked on world of warcraft for 3 months. within those 3 montsh i made two level 60characters and seemed to clock up more time ont he game than there actualy was in 3 months. i mised out on college i didnt leave the house i jsut satayed at home and played on warcraft morning to night. or more like night to morning but thats not the point. the game took from me my social life my personal life and my educational life and i nearly failed everything because of it. before that i fialed my first year of uni because the time i didnt spend out wiht my mates i spent playing Guild Wars... alot. ive lost out and nearly uined my life because of these games.
now that you understand my hatred lets go into why people choose these games and why there so adictive.
first and foremost. they are easy. easy to level up easy to get better at easy to enjoy. they pose no real challenge and give you a sense of achievement when you succeed in them. they are fun you can play for hours on them doing pretty mucht he same thing over and over and never get bored cos theres always another level to reach another item to get or another quest to do. but the real reason peopel play them so much the real reaosn they continue playing them well after youd put down a normal game is the FAKE (and i cant emphasis this enough) feeling of socialising you get from the games. you sit there and you join a group with 5 other people and you chat away. you gain a few 'friends' who you play with regularly and you talk to them discussing games and things and feel like your talking to the real person but your not. you stay in yoru room to talk to these fake friedns who are playignt he game to talk to their fake friends. (im actualy failing to get across this point right so maybe someone has alreayd done a better job or can help me out) you sit there and ignoree everything around you because you dont need it. youve got your mates online who youve never seen and most likely never will but they make you feel like you have friends. sort of. i cant describe it right im faliling now at this. but its that sense of comunity. the fake sense. that makes peopel play the games. its not real. but its pulling and the desire to play so you can see them talk to them and play with them is intense. and unhealthy.
ok now ot finish wiht a point that actualy is in relation tot he opic at hand. peopel play them for the above reaosns and because simply put. its easier. and you can hide the fact you play an online game. going out to roleplay is a little different and for some people an extra step towards geekyness.
ok rant ends here as i ahve to eat. hope at least someone gets where im comming from with this

adhd is NOT an excuse its a reason. i dont use it as an excuse im jsut pointing out that i have an adictive personality which IS part of having ADHD.how dare you judge exactly what MY personal experience is with it?> who are you to judge what it does and oesnt affect in my life? its different for different people same as dislexia or any others like it and affects peopel to different degrees in everything. i at no point said its an excuse for my life nor would i. you are a horrible sad little close minded person to judge me like that then get all high and mighty over your own afairs. so quick to judge. sort out your own problems before judging me or dont speak if you have nothing polite or constructive to say. words cannot describe my contempt for people like you

| doesn't seem to be your week son... Posting a confused rant on a thread where you acknowledge you haven't taken the trouble to read the comments of other users is plain rude. Further, laying out your emotional baggage in public and then flaming other people for having an opinion on it just compounds the problem. Every point you made in the second post could just as easily be applied to the conclusions you drew in your first post. You made a value judgement on a past time of many users of this forum because you had had a bad experience, fair enough. However, when the inadequacy of your argument was drawn out, you took personal offence. This is not acceptable as you were the one who put your baggage on the table in the first place. [Admin hat on] Highlandertr consider this a warning in relation to your posts. Continue down this vein and I will have no choice but to ban you. You should start being considerate to other users by reading their posts before commenting on them. Since you have mentioned your dyslxia I invite you to use the built in spell checker as this might make your comments clearer. I also ask that you take the time and trouble to read these. http://forums.rule7.co.uk/Topic95-55-1.aspx http://forums.rule7.co.uk/Topic96-55-1.aspx [admin hat off]

hmmm.....
i dont see how telling me that it is not an excuse for my entire life, thus asuming that i use it as an excuse for things, isnt a personal insult brought on by ignorance or just plan spite. then using the word fatuous implying that my opinion is stupid inconsequential and not worth considering on the matter jsut rubs salt in the wound. i take personal offence because i dont see another way to take such comments. these comments have nothing to do with any of the rest of my post except to say that its bad. i dont see how you can consider this to be a valid argument or anythign less than an insult to my erson. but your choice i guess. and of course admins always right.
tbh im quite surprised im getting this angry over this. its not like i expected any different. i dont expect anyone to understand my anger nor my way of thinking because you dont know the backstory to this. i garuntee if i met any of you in a pub you woudlnt think me the same person. but hell ive had enough of rambling. i stand by my belief that this person was personaly insulting me for no reason and ignored the rest of my post just to insult me. if you as an administrator will stand by this persons insults and believe that i am in the wrong then you prove to me that their is actualy no point to remaining on here. nor explaining myself any further.
now you dont have to deal with my awfull spelling anymore and for the record. im not dyslexic just angry and couldnt care about spelling right now.

| No you obviously don't get what I was trying to say, so evidentally I have not been clear enough and therefore I will send a PM to re-iterate the point. [Admin hat on] And since neither of us is adding anything to the discussion of the thread, I suggest we take the matter there. [admin hat off]

| Skipping the previous posts and back on topic...... I don't think table top is dying, I just think the base of new players is shifting (I do concede this is based of my experience with the university society I am still a member of). In my under-grad days the main drawing pool for players were the Sci-Fi society and the local Goth scene. However with the move of most of the goths to the local Cam game (quite good actually, and more chance for brooding...) and the growth of online gaming coupled with the death of the Sci-Fi society through the mianstreaming of Sci-Fi killing of the other staple recruiting ground things weren't looking good for the roleplaying society (2 new members, both of whom left after a month because "I can't level up as quickly as I can online"). Then one of our players mentioned this to friends on her creative writting course. After they got by the Dungeons and Dragons/piss poor fantasy connections and were introduced to Victorian espionage, or pulp sky piracy they were hooked and we started drawing a large ammount of interest from this group, leading to a growing player base with 8 weekly games running on Society nights and over 40 active members. So no, Table Top insent dead, it's just evolving, and we need to look to new sources for new players.

highlandertr (5/23/2007) adhd is NOT an excuse its a reason.I disagree entirely... you may also need to look up the meaning of 'excuse' i have an adictive personality which IS part of having ADHD. Talking arse ye are says I... how dare you judge exactly what MY personal experience is with it?> Like this! *dares* There ye go. who are you to judge what it does and doesnt affect in my life? *sigh* Look You don't want opinion then don't air your laundry in public sonny jim. Learn and learn quick... if you post stuff on a public forum expect it to be brought up or debated. words cannot describe my contempt for people like you Ah well. Personally Im a bit tired of people turning round and using the Ive got ADHD/Aspergers/AN Other popular disorder as an explanation for their behaviour. Ive also noted that the few people I know who ACTUALLY have such problems rarely mention it in such a context. Maybe Im mean but I don't think so.
